(This is for Steam, if that helps at all)

My computer likes to explode microphones, so I need a way to capture my speaker output as a mic. I've fiddled with my settings (Realtek HD Audio) and nothing I've changed makes Steam pick up the sound. The only options I have in Steam are "Line In" and "Mic In".

Running Windows 7, latest drivers, etc.

Realtek HD Audio is very marginal. I guess you are looking to blow up somthing more expensive than a mic? Try FIXING the problem. Get a sound card.

I will say this is by far the best story against Realtek HD Audio I ever hear. I have never heard of a sound card/chipset blowing up a mic in 25 years.

Not a literal explosion, but every mic I've plugged into my mobo breaks.

As in, it will work fine in a friend's computer, plug it into mine, does not work, then it never works again.

Would a Sound Blaster Audigy be good? I think it may be too old, but I'm not looking to spend a lot of money (because I have none)

That is what I bought to replace my Realtek HD Audio. I felt the sound wasn't as rich but the mic worked. I needed the mic. I figured I could always upgrade if I felt the need.

I know it didn't really explode the mic. There isn't even enough power needed to do something like that delivered to the MOBO. Still frying the mic is impressive. To do that it needs at least 10 times the power that it should have. That is REAL wrong.

i have a SB audigy (the original one) and it works good. much better than any onboard mobo sound.

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:
