Whats the best file format for my needs.

I have an Acer Aspire one netbook (9") which doesn't have a DVD drive.

I want to rip some movies onto an SD card so I can watch them on the acer.

I have VLC installed so file formats should not be an issue on the acer.

My PC has Nero 9, DVD decrypt & DVD shrink.

Preferable using what I already have what is the best option for my needs. Each movie must be able to fit onto a 4GB SD card to be tranfered to the acer.

First off, DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink are great pieces of software but are no longer in development and are severely outdated. You need to upgrade to either DVDFab HD Decrypter (free) or AnyDVD (21 day trial) for your ripping needs.
Second for what you are wanting to do, your best bet is to convert your ripped files to .avi using a program such as AutoGK or FairUse Wizard Lite (both of which are free) this will get the main movie down to around 700mb. Guides and download links to the programs themselves can both be found with a quick search of this site.

Ok So this is no longer a nero discussion - Sorry.

I Think I posted about 4 years ago and got DVD Decrypter & Shrink suggested and they have served me well since. I'll have a look at your suggestions but I'm trying to move away from coping to DVDR as they don't last long with my kids (even with Tuffdiscs)

Got loads of storage space so I'll try keeping all my movies in a digital format from now on. Would prefer to keep the quality and have movies at 3gb if needed.

I'll have a play about with the programs you suggested and see what suits me best.

None of what I suggested to you includes putting your files on to dvd disks. Also due to the advantages in compression capability of the .avi format compared to mp4 or the like, you will have near original quality (depending on size of course) with 700mb or if that is not good enough then 1400mb. Either way that is still better than the 4.7 with dvd.

Gave it ago last night with AutoGK - Already had the .vob files for Dog Hotel on my pc so I tried that.

It did 2 passes which I suppose I could do without but it still took 2hours 45 mins. My system isn't new but I would have thought it should be quicker than this.

Also the sound was out of sync to the point of being unwatchable.

I did run it to a 2GB AVI File is there a better option?

What program did you use to rip the VOB files originally? What did you use for the audio encoding, CBR or VBR? Also like I said regarding the compressability of the files, you are really not using that format to its fullest advantage by outputting to 2gb.

Speed of encoding with 2 pass will depend on system ability,you may get a slight increase if you shutdown any unnecessary processes but for a single core cpu 3hrs ain't bad since that's how long it takes mine

Ripped with DVD decryter. Would it be quicker to straight from DVD disk?

Not sure about the audio encoding - Whats the difference?

I'll try smaller files then.

Regarding the processor I have 1.86ghz Duo core with 4GB ram. CPU didn't get over 60% I think maybe the software doesn't take advantage of both cores?

Do I need 2 passes?
