Help!! Just bought the sony dwu 18a which the oem version of sony dru 530a. It reads cd-r and dvd, and burns cd-r perfectly. However it refuses to burn dvd-r.
Any attempts to initiate burning of dvd-r results to a total lockup of the system not amendable to ctrl-alt-del. Only way to reboot is to pull the plug on the computer.
My softwares are Nero6 and DVDclone. On both applications, it is at the commencement of the writing phase of the application is when the lockup occurs.The indicator light on the external panel of the machine does not come on. I have tried to burn an ISO file using Nero6 which similar problems. The blank dvd-r is unused.

Do you think there is a physical problem with the DVD laser???
( It seems to burn cd-r ok. Is that a different laser though??)

My system is : AMD1.8G , Ram 1G, HDD 80G
Motherboard Gigabyte 7VRXP
Installed softwares: MSOffice2003, AnyDVD, Norton Antivirus.
