The only thing I can derive from that log is you're using a brand of media, CMC, that lots of people have trouble with.

Did you try removing the new memory you added?

I think it sound like the media is faulty.Going back a while when i had my old dvd writer which was the pioneer 104 i kept getting a power calibration error.I did everything re formatted my hard drive the lot as there was no way that a full tub of 50 discs could be faulty.I was gob smacked to find out it was and obviously my supplier got a nice smile off me when i returned them.

I removed the memory yesterday and added the old one. It is now able to burn data disc, but not dvd's. I had installed two 256 mb(one was 168-pin DIMM sdram pc133) (and other was SDRAM 256 MB "UNBUFF") chip both different. when i took at the cheapest one i read the chip and the chip said "unbuff" so i replace that one with the old chip and left the other one installed. I know have 384 mb of memory. I just tried to burn abnother dvd at 4x and this is what happend :

Hi Mopy,

From your first log:

Burn process started at 40X
also....
Multisession : TRUE
Multisession type: : Start multisession
Joliet : TRUE
Allow pathdepth more than 8 directories : TRUE
Allow more than 255 characters in path : TRUE

Second log:

Joliet :FALSE
Allow pathdepth more than 8 directories : TRUE
Allow more than 255 characters in path : TRUE

A good place to start would be to make these all false, under the ISO tab.

It looks like your using the Memorex +R (Disc Manufacturer ID: CMC.MAG.
Media type ID: F01). Memorex gets its stuff from two different mfgs. This is not the stuff you want to use to make DVDs with. It will work fine for data discs. I think the "good" Memorex will show as "Disc Manufacturer: Prodis - cS03". Lots of people report problems with Memorex so most of us recommend Ritek G-04 or Verbatim.

If you still want to use it, Go into Shrink> Edit> Pefrences> Target DVD size and change from DVD-5 to custom and reduce the size of the disc about 100 MB or so. That way you are not trying to burn out to the edge of the disc.

See if it helps.

I don't think its your memory. What kind of media were you using before this problem started?

Cheers,
Frank

I have had the same kind of problem.
Finally I found out that the cause lay with other programs that were loaded at Windows start and that interfered with Nero.
My suggestion: try to start Windows with as few resident programs as possible. Can you burn now ok?
If so, add one of two startup programs, then try burning a dvd again. And so on.
Btw: in this process I found I had many spyware programs running that I was not aware of. I killed these of course and now Nero is working fine again.

WELL I APPRECIATE ALL OF YOU TRYING TO HELP ME. So let me first of say Thank You all. Now I dont think its is the Memorex dvd's because I have burned one perfectly and that was the last one. It worked fine. Second it cant be the startup programs beacuse I have tried burning it in Safe Mode. Third the media I was using was the same i have not changed anything except the memory. I now will try to use Rotary style of buring dvd's because I have been using "DVD- VIDEO" (CAN THAT BE THE PROBLEM?) well I let you know how ROTARY'S style goes

thank you

Hi,
A few things to try.
Make sure DMA is still enabled, sometimes windows will change to PIO for no reason.

Download the Nero "registry Checker" from the Ahead website. Double click it, if all is well it will just close. If there is a problem it will fix it and tell you to reboot. I used to have exact same problem with my old Sony drive it wasn't "buffer underun" though I thought it was like yourself. When there is a buffer underun it actualy says so in the log.
Better still uninstall Nero and reinstall with Latest Version 6.3.1.6

If using Winxp make sure the windows Burning facility is turned off in Admin tools "Services".

Also stick with the default "DVD-Video" option, I have burnt well over 700 discs in that mode and never found any problems with it.
P.S. I just noticed at the bottom of the details post you have PXHelp** listed. This is part of Veritas/Sonic Recordnow dx software so I would say you had a software conflict for sure.
Remove all software to do with burning then install Nero.

I would also go into registry and manually remove any burning software remnants, look particulary for recordnow entries.

ESPECIALLY here: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"Class"="CDROM"

Look for Lowerfilters entries and delete any Lowerfilters entries. There may be 2 or 3 depending on software used.
Then reboot.
Install Nero and burn.

Well I did every single thing u told me Uninstalled, registries, the registry check(fixed some error that it found), Dma, ect. I tried to burn another DVD after all that and still no luck. Im beginning to wonder if i have a curse. I will include a log of the most recent failure. I DONT UNDERSTAND, IT COPIES TO 100% , THEN THE BUFFER JUST FALLS FROM 100% TO 0
The log is:

I notice PXHelp20.sys is still there, so you still have files from other proggs.
Your problem is when it is trying to write the lead out. Which is the bit it does when the buffer drops to zero.
I had the exact same problem with my Sony DRU500a last year. I can't remember exactly how I cured it, but the stuff earlier was some stuff I tried. It wasn't the drive or media. As eventualy I got it running as it should be.
Go to start/search and in the search prog go to "all files and folders" in top enter "pxhelp*.* then in "look in" pick c: drive then click on more adanced options and tick
search system folders
search hidden folders
search subfolders
Then do a search,, it should come up with 3 or more files all starting with PXHelp
As in
PXHelp20.sys
PxHelp20.pnf
Pxhelp20.inf
Delete them and reboot.
You could also try this, depending what IDE Controller drivers you are using. I always use the Windows defaullt Dual Channel Ide Drivers.
Go to Device manager and uninstal "IDE Controller drivers" so there are none at all.
When you reboot windows will reinstall them.
Then check them to make sure DMA is enabled, then try another burn.

Use a Rewritable to check.

If none of this works, maybe a format and reinstall is all thats left.
Good Luck.

hi there

ok, firstly you may be one of those users that nero v6 sucks for! (50/50 with users here!) as i have had 3 versons of v6 and all had errors at start of writing even on DATA aswell as dvd!

here is nero v5 (I USE v5 TOO!!!!) the picture above is v5

ftp://ftp4.nero.com/Nero551056.exe

also in your log above i see this!!

==================================
1:07:41 AM #10 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 244
Last possible write address on media: 2295103 (510:01.28, 4482MB) <----- SEEMS TOO BIG ???????
Last address to be written: 2141631 (475:55.06, 4182MB) <----- SEEMS TOO BIG ???????
==================================

now it may be the size of dvdr its reading and be fine? or it may be the files you have??? should be about 4.36gig to fit a dvdR

but uninstall nro v6 and try v5! i have used it for 4/5 years!!!!

THx...

EDIT:

Just a thought? you dont have your hard drive on the same eide cable as the dvd writer do you?

as mine is on primary master on its own! my HD's are raid of serial ata (not normal eide channels!)

list how you have all drives and hd's setup please!!!!!

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

File 'Drivers\atapi.sys': Ver=5.1.2600.1106 (xpsp1.020828-1920), size=86912 bytes, created 29/08/2002 02:27:50 (Adapter driver for rec)

Both the same file both same version both xpsp1, BUT different creation date. I vaigly remember changing this when I was haveing problems.
It won't hurt to change it, if you want I can email it to you it's only 86kb. Just copy/paste.

Another thing that might work.
Run System File Checker, it will search through system files and repair any corrupt system files.
Go to Start/Run and type "sfc /scannow"

All the best.
You will need your Winxp cd in the drive.

P.S.
After studying your log files I have noticed a few other things.
First log file is for a CD not DVD unless you have 40x DVD's.

You say "bufferunderrun" at end.
Well after studying closer I notice this.
Simulation Starts at 12-42-54 sec
Simulation finishes at 12-56-35 sec
Around 15 mins which is correct for 4x
Then burn process starts at 12:56:36
Burn process fails at 12:56:36

So it is failing at the start of the burn not at the end.
Same with second log failed at start after simulation completes.

What is the actual Make and Model number of your writer? only info you have given is GENERIC

hi there

ok, so you used Nero v5 and had the same results yes?

There is something more here!!! i would pull out and change round your eide cables with a HD (swap round!) see if its hardware based, really you need another burner to try! as it may have gone (the laser?)

Use Nero "info tool" to check your aspi layer is working! in start menu under nero/tools

Also use Nero "Drivespeed" this tests sped of each drive! and lets Nero associate they drives to Nero for usage!

and lasty upgrade your firmware on the dvd writer!

Thx...

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

did you install the aspi layer back in?

could be jumper setting on the drive? is it on its own? is the jumper on there or removed? as some drives you remove the jumper altogether!!!

thx...

The only thing i can tell you about the writer is that i got it at Best Buy. its mnaufactured by " Digital Research Technologies" and its the "Dvd+Rw/+R dual format Internal 8x DVD ReWritable Drive" str8 from the box. ( i just dont get it......it has made burned succefully one DVD then no more). And it fails at when it reaches 100% simulation then the buffer drops down . then at the bottom by the status bar it says "lead out" then boom all the buffer drops down to 0%

im getting really irriated at this computer.
