I would put your DVD-rom as slave to your Maxtor hard drive. Then put you DVD-RW as master on it's own on the Secondary Ide controller.

Another possible way is change your writer from slave to master and your DVD-Rom from master to slave.

ASPI layer...

Its needed as a sort of driver that cd drives run on and software! xp does not load one as default so you load your own!

JUMPERS

are little plastic/metal inside that act as a switch! these are located on the back of cdrom drives and hard drives! there are usally 3 postions to set your new drive to before you install it in your pc case! its a sort of crossover swith to jion those tiny tiny pins of metal together!

A, MASTER
B, SLAVE
C, CS Cable select

now if you have 1 drive on a single eide cable (the lead from motherboard to drive) you either totally remove the jumper or set it as MASTER!!!!

if you have 2 drives on a single eide cable you set it in your case, The dvd writer to MASTER and the second drive to SLAVE!

Q - did you do this?

well i knew what a jumper was i just didnt know it was called a "jumper" and today i went and exchanged my dvd writer for another one with "buffer underrun technology" it's a Buslink DVD writer ect..... i made it a primary master and im burning a cd now. ..... The bad thing about this one is that it doesn't let you simulate a burn, for some reason Nero has in the background but you can choose it. I let you guys know how it goes its by 56 % rite now

YAY! Its a success that burner copied it perfect. I guess you huys were right it was a messed up drive. Now I know why the other burner(GENERIC)was missing it's software....someone else had exchanged it and stayed with the software.( I wonder why they returned such a fine DVD writer? lol that's sarcasm) Any way I burned Braveheart perfectly the only thing that went wrong was...... that when i put it in too see it on my DVD player I burned the movie with the director talking about it in the background. lol. I'd like to thank you people for all the help and generosity you have shown me Rotary you are an afterdawn addict Thank God you are. lol. HappyNow your were a great help also than you both and i am "Happy now" lol. nice name. well bye bye.....this site rocks!! i'll be back if i have anymore dilemma's

If your haveing so much hassle with this driver take it back and ask for a replacement.If it is still the same same with a replacement drive you have a software or hardware problem probably software issue.Re format the hard drive and try again.I know when i put in some more memory in my system it caused xp all sorts of problems for what reason i still do not know.Another simple cause for this problem is if your memory is not inserted in the correct order.Check your motherboard manual to make sure everything is where it should be.
