okay I went to lite-on's websites and found this post:
Compatibility Problems:
- Problems with cheap media (no manufacturer's ID) have been encountered.
- Recording quality with low quality media (e.g. Princo, InfoSmart) is poor.
Advantages:
- Good seek times for a DVD burner.
- Can be upgraded via firmware to a LiteON LDW-851S with 8x DVD+R support. With the latest LDW-851S firmware, this drive can burn RICOHJPNR01 media and others at 6x and 8x Z-CLV with great results! - Shorter than most other DVD burners.
- Frequent firmware updates means good support for new media.
- Great for backing up copy protected discs.
- Compatible with KProbe for CD/DVD error checking.
- Because it's a 4x drive, you can pick one up for next to nothing.
Disadvantages:
- Poor instruction manual/user's guide.
- Questionable build quality.
- No Mt. Rainier support yet.
- Does not read or write to DVD-RAM.
- Poor burn quality on cheap media.
- Questionable results with KProbe for CD-R/RW burns.
- Bundled software is medicore.
- Bundle does not include an IDE cable or blank media.
(for some reason I got an error when I went to the page, it may just be my browser???)(sorry dead link, go to lite-on page 4 firmware)
you may also want to go to cdfreaks.com and go to the lite-on forum, to see if there are any posts. i'm going to check it out in a little while, so i'll post my progress. I guess it only does dvd+r at 8x though, i'm probably going to test it, pm or post if ur going to upgrade the firmware, good luck!!!
