Just thought I would mention soemthing I found unique in Kill Bill.

When the movie starts and the audio options are selected you can choose many options like DTS or Dolby Digital. If you then watch the movie, there are scenes where subtitles are automatically inserted into the scenes. For example, in Tokyo in the bar when Uma calls out Lucy Liu.

Now I figured this out when I backed up my copy without subtitles, as I normally do they were NOT inserted into those scenes. Of course, turning on the subtitles was pointless as I deleted them form the backup entirely.

So far, nothing unusual right? Well, I then chose to make 2 different backups, one with Dolby Digital keeping all subtitles and one with DTS keeping all subtitles. Guess what? Neither version defaulted the subtitles on in the scenes where they were supposed to be. However, if you select Subtitles on in the options, they will appear in those scenes but, NOT for the dialog in the rest of the movie.

In other words, by choosing to keep subtitles and not turning them on, the subs do not appear. If choosing to keep subtitles and turning them on, they ONLY appear in the scenes in japanese where the director instructed them to be in the film.

So I guess the 2 questions I have are:

How would one be able to have english subtitles throughout the entire film if they wanted them (perhaps someone who was deaf or hearing impaired)?

And number 2 which is more important to me, how could the subtitles be permanently installed so as not to have to turn them on before viewing of the film every time?

Interesting DVD for certain.

I like to keep the English subtitles in my movie backups. Kil Bill was no exception as my subtitles work for the entire movie with no problem. When I choose subtitles with my remote I get two English options. The first one will not work for the entire movie but the second one works for the entire movie.

You are correct about there being 2 different English subtitle choices. However, if you do not set them to be "ON" then you will not get English subtitles in the scenes where they are needed.

The original DVD does not require you to turn on the subtitles, they are on by default and my question was there anyway to achieve the same thing...subtitles by default without having to turn them on prior to watching the movie.
