I started this thread in the Nero Forum, but after posting it I felt that "Nero" wasn't the most appropriate place to do so. I apologize in advance for opening the thread in another section. If the administrators feel the need to erase my thread, I will understand.

When I had my first machine my rate of cd/dvd drive changing was 1 in every year and a half. I used to have an Asus K8V-Se deluxe, with 1 gB Ram, AMD-64 of 2gHz and a good power supply. At first I thought it was normal, since I used to burn a lot of discs, DVD's and CD's. In that machine I changed Toshiba, Sony, Optorite, Lite-On, and such. I had that machine for maybe 5 years. I have a new machine now: Biostar T-Series, AMD-Athlon 64 Dual 2.60 GHz, 2 GB RAM and 650 Watts Power Supply. Right now I have a LiteOn and LG DVD "Multi Recorders" from CompUsa (they MAY have a year now); and yet again those 2 are failing.

I never have a problem with data, only in doing Music CD's or making DVD movies (with their Video_TS and all). I can make a music CD and read it perfectly in my car-radio. Others (using the same Nero as always) I can't make it work in my cd-player but it can play fine in the PC. Same thing happens with DVD's. Sometimes I can see it in my DVD player and others I can't.

I burn in the lowest speed and nothing. I have changed media: nothing. I check regularly for driver updates: nothing. My HDD's are up to date: defragmented and clean. I don't burn as many discs as I used to. I have a UPC to protect my PC. I refuse to think that my PC is damaging the disc drives because this is almost an entirely new machine (with the exception of the case). I have talk with friends and they don't seem to have that kind of problem with theirs; yes they buy new drives from time to time but not one every 18 months. If anyone have any kind of theory to my predicament please share it, because I'm fresh out of ideas.

I can't offer much.
You say you have no problem with data - but you don't use data disks in a car or in a DVD player.
You don't have to burn disks at the lowest speed - just at a moderate speed - on decent media - and there is a general consensus that only Taiyo-Yuden or Verbatim have consistently good DVD blanks;cd's I leave to one side, because my limited experience with them suggest that most work.
Anyway, the burner uses two different lasers for CD and DVD and the idea that both intermittently fail (but not when burning data) stretches belief.

I assume that your Nero log files (on a burning session that otherwise was without issue) indicates a normal burn - but the disk will only play on the PC;that suggests low quality media.

I would concentrate on one aspect to start, ie movie DVD burning.
Use ImgBurn instead of Nero.

You are right about the Nero log files, they don't show any kind of error. I don't usually copy DVD movies, I make them. if there's an episode of a TV series that, for instance, my dad likes, I convert a few to DVD files and burn them. But lately the rate of success has changed to 75%. Again, Nero says they burn fine, though some of them can't be played in my DVD player. Anyway, I'll change the software for DVD's and maybe start burning Music CD's with Windows Media Player.

7 hours later:

I tried and burn a music cd with Windows Media Player 11 with the same results. Can't play it in my car radio, but can listen to it in another cd player. I'm starting to look for another cd burner, but I'm afraid that in a few months I'll start to have the same problems again.

Well, updated the Lite-On driver. Successfully made 2 music-cd's and a dvd movie. The second dvd I tried to make didn't play on my dvd player, nor the third; they play on my PC, though. Still having the same stupid problem. Guess I'll have to get used to buy a new DVD writer every 6 months.

This sucks so f*&@#$ing much.
