Hello, when i am copying dvds at 8 speed, the buffer levels fall up and down and never remain constant. for example, they will remain high for approx 1 minute, then go really low the next. This ensures that to burn a full dvd disc takes about 11 minutes. I have been told it should be taking approx 8 minutes with an 8 speed writer.

The writer i am using is the pioneer 107, and i have changed my dvd rom but still the problem persists. I have also moved the drives from a pc tower into a duplicater and i am stil getting the same problem.

Any help at all would be much appreciated. Many thanks

Are you trying to copy "on the fly"? This method delivers data to your drive inconsistently which could explain why your buffer level is jumping around.

What software are you using?

Is the media rated 4X or 8X? What brand is it? Not all media is created equal and this may explain your longer burn times.

Thanks for the reply. yes i am copying on the fly. Have tried using many different types of software, including Nero, instant cd/dvd and record now max but still the same.

I am using dvds which were originally 4 speed but i had my pioneer 107 flashed to enable the discs to work at 8 speed. I think i will try your suggestion and try alternate discs.

Thanks

On the fly is dicey at best. It doesn't take much longer to have the files written to a temp file and then burned to disc - it may not take any longer because your burning software won't constantly be waiting for the buffer to fill and the buffer-underrun feature won't be kicking in. Your HD will be able to keep your burner's buffer filled much better than reading directly from your ROM and I highly suggest this method over on the fly.
