I have two different releases of the same DVD movie.
One is widesceen format and one is full screen format.
Unfortunately the widescreen version has Japanese menus.

I'd like to combine the two into one DVD somehow so that I have the English menus and extra features from the fullscreen version but the video from the widescreen version.

How do I do this?

From what I've read here I believe it has something to do with the video_ts.ifo file. How do I read that file?

Is it as simple as substituting one ifo file for the other (unlikely)

Thanks

It's not easy and you will only do it once.

This method involves placing the English word beside the Japanese in the menu.

Actually I was hoping to use the menu from the full screen version (which is in English) but have it 'point' the the video files from the widescreen version.

I just downloaded a trial copy of tmpgenc to see if I can do it with that. I may have to learn how to create my own menu

There's an advanced Authoring forum at Doom9 which might be of some use.

And Videohelp probably has some opinions.

The videohelp guide is just too complicated. If the wide screen movie has the same number of chapters and same number of audio and subtitle streams as the full screen movie, you can simply substitute the full screen movie with the wide screen one either with DvdReMake Pro or VobBlanker.

With DvdReMake Pro, you load 2 DVDs as 2 projects. Then simply Copy all the blocks (multi-select with Shift) from widescreen project in Domain Content view and Paste the same number of blocks in full screen project. Change the aspect ratio to 16:9 in Video tab. Export. And you're done.

With VobBlanker, load the full screen DVD, select the movie titleset and PGC and click on "Replace" button. Browse to select the widescreen movie IFO. If the IFO has more than PGC, then it's not supported. So VobBlanker's replacement won't work, that's why I suggested DvdReMake Pro. You may be able to do the replacement with PgcEdit but I'm not sure exactly how.

Good luck.
