Hi,

I'm trying to make a simple, still-frame screen capture of a DVD, but no matter how I try, it won't save the file right. No matter what player I use, when I use Alt+PrtScrn and paste the clipboard into Paint, it seems to shop up fine, but when I move the pasted item, the image itself does not move. When I save it and open it, it seems fine, but as soon as I close the DVD player, the image in the file disappears. Different images, when previewed or opened, appear as the same image -- whatever is the currently paused image on the player. In fact, if I just leave the player running and get a screenshot, when I paste it (in any photo program), I get a screenshot... with the entire movie playing just where the DVD player is at.

Is there a reason for this? I know I've successfully made screen caps before this way.

Hiya,

The main problem is your DVD Player Application is using Overlay to display the DVD...

Windows PRTSCR function CANNOT capture an overlay...

You have to use the Capture function in your DVD Player Application to do that..

In PowerDVD:
Pause the film at the point you want to capture a still frame.

Click on the capture icon within PowerDVD.

The captured image is in
EITHER the Windows Clipboard and ready for pasting
OR
the captured image is in a BMP file
(the location of the captured image depends on the configuration you chose when setting PowerDVD up)

Other Player Applications may use a different method, you will need to read the helpfile for your chosen player.

Hope this helps...

Life is just more of the same:

I'm pretty sure I have the stripped down version of PowerDVD, the one that came with this machine.

I've also noticed that certain media files in Windows Media Player also have this overlay function and do not properly copy to the clipboard.

Is there any other way around this?

I have an OEM version of PowerDVD4 installed on another PC and it has the capture function.

Open the options menu, go to General>Advanced>Capture and you should be able to select where you want the capture to go.

Hope this helps :)

I'm pretty sure I already tried that (it having been mentioned on another thread I saw) and that option was nonexistent (I'd double check now to be certain, but I'm at work at the moment).

This machine is a new Dell, and I'm pretty sure the application is the stripped down version. I can't even find an About tab to check what version it really is.

That's a pisser :(

If I remember correctly, the upgrade for the fancy-shmancy version was $29 and I've also seem OEM discs on ebay for around $5-$10.
