Hi all.

I have around 50 dvd's I would like to burn to dvd-r for backup purposes, incase scratches or anything of the sort occurs.

Currently, I just use dvd shrink to rip and shrink then use nero to burn to disc. Very straightforward and easy.. But most of the time the quality is only 50-70%
I usually keep the 2 channel audio and 5.1 channel audio, mainly because I dont really know the difference. Other than 2 channel sounds louder on my tv than 5.1.
But sometimes the only 2 channel on the disc is commentary, so I get tricked like that alot, which is why I just get all audio English 2 and 5.1

Im wondering, if theirs a program that is better, that would make the quality better, even if only slight. The program has to be relatively easy to use, or atleast have a guide to guide me through it.

If dvd shrink is best, does deep analysis make any difference in quality?

I am only burning to 4.7 gb dvd-r
Thanks all.

You can get an increase in quality if you can dispense with menus, extras, etc.
Click on 'Re-author' and drag the main title (usually - not always - listed as Title 1) from right to left.

I don't see any particular quality increment using deep analysis - but I'm not a video buff.

There is a 'DVD-Rebuilder' forum at Afterdawn that has guides for that program.
It's drawback is that it requires a commercial plugin (CCE) - but is reported to give very good results.

IMHO, If that were your real purpose for backing up, you should be backing up 1:1 to DVD-DL.

Putting >4.7 of data into 4.7GB of space will always require a loss of some kind, whether it is a loss of quality by compression or a loss of features by removal.

Whether or not it's perceptible or acceptable is your call.

You can use the free version of DVD Rebuilder, so no cost in that, plus there's the awesome (and free) HC Encoder to use with it. I personally have the paid for version of Rebuilder and i use HC Encoder only, i use it often and it produces fantastic results. Put it this way, i don't own a single Dual Layer disc, with Rebuilder i've never needed one. Rebuilder can even make the mostly dark, episodic series Battlestar Galactica look very impressive at 44% video compression.

For movies i do movie only mode though episodics and concerts i do full disc mode, Rebuilder works wonders regardless (it's an encoder whereas programs such as DVD Shrink are transcoders), i have used Shrink very heavily over the years, and very very rarely ever bothered with deep analysis etc, but now i use Rebuilder for everything, poor old DVD Shrink tends to get very lonely.
