Hi. I am fairly new to the whole DVD ripping process but i am now successfully burning dvd's on to disc using Nero Startsmart Essentuals. The only problem that i am having is that the audio is too low and it's sometimes hard to follow conversations. Is there something i can do in the settings of Nero to alter the sound quality or is there something else that i can possibly do to improve the sound quality? Thanks in advance, Aussiez.

Is this a commercial movie DVD backup that is being produced or AVI files being converted to DVD format?

If it's a backup of a DVD and the original DVD audio is ok, the backup should be the same, since there is no conversion of the audio.

What's the audio like before the DVD is burned.

I assume the audio on the pre WinAvi file was ok?

Was the audio on the post WinAvi file ok?

What type of file was it before WinAvi converted it to AVI?

You say you burned the AVI using Nero - does this mean it was burned as a data disk (you simply burned an AVI file to a DVD) or you used Nero to convert it to DVD format and then burned to disk.

Is the audio on the disk low volume on the PC and the standalone player?

You can use MediaInfo to find out the video and audio types (drag the files onto the short-cut).

I would guess that the audio on the pre and post were mp3.

Assuming that the DVD disk audio is AC3 and is only low on the PC, you can install AC3 Filter and adjust it to a loud setting.

'Start' > 'AC3 Filter' > 'Config AC3 Filter' and select the 'loud' pre-set.

If the audio is low on the standalone, you either use another converter program (keeping fingers crossed) take the files apart (demux)and bump up the volume then put the movie together again.
Demuxing is only practical for a one shot - you cannot be doing it routinely.

Sorry to be wordy - please G_d, someone has a simple answer and pops up.
