I searched for some information, there's a lot out there and got some information but not quite what I was looking for. Maybe I didn't search enough...

I learned how to backup my DVDs a few years ago and was taught to use RipIt4Me, DVD Decrypter, and DVD Shrink. Worked great for most movies, then of course the updates stopped occuring. I still used this combination as my primary solution, typically with AnyDVD running in the background. Because of problem discs, I also have DVD Fab 4, 5, and 6 (sometimes different versions seem to work when others won't), ImgBurn, CloneDvd, Nero, etc. and have used them successfully in the past for specific discs.

My question is - what should be my normal routine for the majority of discs these days? AnyDVD seems to work great, and I can use it with my very familiar RipIt4Me combination, but is that necessary? Do I need to run Decrpter and Shrink all the time? DVDFab also works great, usually version 6 but sometimes I revert to 4, and then I open the resulting files with Shrink and re-author and burn. I think I'm still a little fuzzy on what each program does, when to use what, etc.

Just looking to speed up my routine and get a higher initial success rate, would also like to know which programs to register for so I can stop using trials or pared down versions.

Thanks much, and if this is covered elsewhere please point me in the right direction!

1. dvdfabhddecryter (free version) will rip every known dvd. If it fails to rip, it's due to dvdrom unable to read the disc or corrupt/dirty dvd.
2. dvdshrink is only needed if you need to shrink the files to fit on a standard dvd.
That's the only software I've been using for the past 3 years, and has never failed to rip a dvd.

If you have the full version of dvdfab, then dvdshrink is no longer needed since the full version can shrink the files during the rip.

I burn my dvd's using nero but that is just my preference.
And finally to get my widescreen dvds to 4/3 fullscreen I use convertx2dvd to make the conversion.

Thanks guys!

I just recently had a DVD that couldn't be read by DVDFab 6 much less processed but AnyDVD handled it just fine. But in general I agree, DVDFab seems to get the job done.

To rtm27 - isn't my current/old method of running RipIt4Me pretty much what you suggest? I thought it was really a wrapper for DVD Decrypter (and I run AnyDVD in the background), and it also fixed other things after (probably running FixVTS or whatever), then it runs shrink, then I just burn with any burning software, usually Decrypter works just fine, Nero, etc. Am I missing something?

Still looking for better information about what each program or step really does, is that listed somewhere or do I just need to keep digging and searching to piece things together? For instance, I rarely if ever run any programs (such as FixVTS or vobblanker) in between decrypting and shrinking/burning. How would I know when it was necessary to do so? I'm really just looking for a better general understanding of how it all works, mostly from an academic but also practical standpoint, and also just trying to streamline the process.

Thanks!

You run fixvts on any rip that doesn't play properly because of navigation errors.

I also use to use ripit4me, but it hasn't been updated in almost 3 years. I now only use dvdfab free version. I'm surprise it hasn't work for you on all your rips. I've yet encountered a DVD it wouldn't rip.

I think you can still use ripit4me if you are running anydvd in the background. It would definitely be necessary since ripit4me is no longer updated. ripit4me automatically runs fixvts on every dvd it rips (though it's not necessary with anydvd running in the background).

DVDfab paid version is like having ripit4me/nero combined since it rips the dvd, then shrinks it, then burns it, and it can also convert to other formats. But everyone has a different way of doing things.

I rip with dvdfab to ISO format. Then I use fairuse wizard to convert the ISO to avi (x264 codec), then I use covertx2dvd to convert back to DVD fullscreen. I like all my DVD's to play in fullscreen 4/3. I cannot watch a movie with blackbars on them.

I had a new Sony that the usuals couldn't handle and found that DVD-Cloner VI v6.00 build 978 could. In fact it handled the decryption, shrink fitting, and burning all at one click. I also used it for transcoding an avi - it took like 3 hours but I did it on my laptop which is pretty slow and only 1Gb RAM.
