Hey Guys,
Big thanks for all the helpful knowledge. I am in the process of ripping my dvd collection to hardrive. I use dvd decrypter, dvd fab and dvd shrink.

I have settled upon a process that i would like to run by you guys and see if you can spot any problems with it as i am not too techinal minded.

-I rip the entire uncompressed dvd to the hard drive using one of the above mentioned programs.
-I then open the rip in dvd shrink and create one copy of the movie only with no compression.
-I then open the original rip in DVDremake and remove the main movie and anything else i don't want. This creates a rip of the dvd with the menu and any special features i like. I will then compress this copy with shrink to reduce its size.

I know this sounds complicated. The end result is that I have full quality copy of the film itelf and a reduced quality/size copy of the menus and special features.

Any comments about problems i may come across would be much appreciated. It seems to be working so far. I am not concerned that it is time consuming, i am more interested in quality. One thing that concerns me is the second time i rip the main film am i reducing its quality just by processing it twice?

'Ripping' is the action of taking files from a disk using a program like DVD Decrypter - after that it's all file manipulation.

Transcoding implies taking bits out to make a video file smaller with a reduction from the original quality.

If you don't transcode a particular part of the video (e.g. the main title) then it's quality doesn't change.
