I have ripped all my dvd's over the past few years(raw images, videos_ts, *.vob's, about 4.some gb a dvd) using dvd shrink and decrypter. In the folders there are usually 4, 1gb files starting with vts*.vob, that are the movie. i usually click on the video_ts file to bring me to the main menu of the dvd. I did all this before not knowing there is probably software to rip directly to avi? My hard drive that has just my dvd's is close to full. I have some movie videos that are around (700mb - 1.something gb) avi's, mkv's, mpeg's. I want to convert my dvd files to this size for storage purposes. I have tried AutoGK, but I am unsure how to tweak it to get the best quality for size/conv. time. It always outputs 2 files. I feel my system is strong enough to do this task effeciently.

MOBO - ASUS Crosshair III Formula
CPU - AMD Phenom ii X4 965 3.4Ghz
MEM - 4Gb Mush
GPU - ATI 2 HD4890 CF
PSU - 910w

Any recommendations on software to do this task. Mabye something that has a conversion preview, that will take mabye a 20 sec chunk out of the middle of the meat of the DVD. Tell how long it will take to convert dvd at selected quality/target size? I see alot of pay converters out there, but the trials don't come with all the bells and whistles to see how good of a converter it is. Mabye I just need someone to hold my hand and show me, step by step how to really use AutoGK. I don't know? This is alot of asking in 1 post. Any takers appreciated.

With AutoGK you have the option of using 'Target Quality' which makes one pass - it's faster but you cannot control the final file size.
If you wish to set the final size, use 'Custom Size' and insert the number you want.
This setting makes two passes and takes longer.

You have to manually input a random value(1398MB...), if you leave the default 1400MB, it will split in 2 parts(per creaky's advice)

So what is it? Its a triad of size/process time\quality? Pick two, thats what you get? Is it possible to state? I want the best quality conversion poss. with AutoGK, of 1gb, not taking more than an hour or three per DVD(flexible on the time thing)? Do I need to toggle with the 'Advanced Settings'? What combinations of 'Target Quality - 100, Custom Size - ?1gb exact? or 1024?, Predifined Size 1.4Gb - if so how do I get 1 output from Predef 2 CD's 1400Mb'. And which one should I have ticked for the best quality, 1Gb, flexible timed output? I feel like I might have repeated myself but, all input much appreciated.

I just converted a 4GB DVD file *.VOB using AutoGK. The output was 1 file @ 1.36 GB (1,466,554,368 bytes). It took just under 45 min. I am very happy with the quality and conv. time. 'Target Size' is ticked at 1398MB. 'Predefined Size' is grey out at 2 CD 1400MB. 'Target Quality' is greyed out at 100%. I dont want to put my outputs onto disc format ever again. When items are greyed out, thats just not how output will be converted? What say I wanted to get down to 1 GB. What value must be entered? You know shave off that extra .36. My guess is that I am on the right track choosing:'Custom Size' - set at 1000MB->convert. Like I said in prev. post, time is flexible. Does .36 GB really take that much more conv. time? Again, Thanks.

Again with questions. What if I have multiple vob's to 1 avi? Do I just click on the first one I want in a sequence ie the 2nd one in sequence? Will AutoGK do the rest? The first VOB has the DVD menu on it, don't want that. Just want the movie, it sarts on the 2nd VOB.

My next set of DVD file conversion has 3 audio tracks. How do I figure which are which. Just need English 2.0 and or 5.1, directors comentary from time to time. Hey whose the jerk posting 2 questions in 1 post? More like 20 questions. I am sure these questions are already amswered somwhere on this site. I just dont know where?

Select the .IFO file of the main movie - usually, but not always VTS_01_0.IFO and all VOB files associated with the IFO will be processed.
Menu files are ignored.

Hypothetically speaking. Could I rip a DVD using DVD Shrink and just tweak the compression, or is that not such a good idea?

You mean trying to get it to 1.4 GB or so? Yes, you could, but it would look like junk. Divx/xvid uses different compression logarithms than mpeg.
