I've been ripping DVDs successfully for a while and haven't had any issues until I tried to make a copy of a copy. I'm having problems using DVD Decrypter to rip from a DVD-R back-up to my hard-drive. Has anyone else experienced this?
Is the issue that I don't have to rip it since it's already been decrypted? Should I be able to just copy it onto the hard-drive from the existing DVD-R?

Copying a Copy is illegal. Out of curiosity, without helping you in your illegal activities of course ;-), why would you want to rip (DeCSS) a movie that has no encryption. Ie: when u first rip it, the CSS encryption is removed, therefore copying is simple....

But again, i stress that it is illegal to have more than one copy of the movie.

Thanks... I guess I wasn't really aware of what the decryption process actually entailed...
We'll just say the original DVD got severely scratched, and I want to back-up the back-up incase the same thing happens again!

Reripping is a redunant, useless step, usually. There are exceptions. Quickie lesson here. Depending on the settings when ripping, different layers of protection and controls are eliminated. The CSS protection is eliminated in order to make the legal copy. Then there are the regional settings and controls for controling menus. There are more settings and functions other than default settings. You need to get a manual (and read it) for the copy software you are using. For the manuals Doom 9 is a starting point and here at AfterDawn. You can rip and not have an item completely ripped.

The user with three words was correct, Disk Copy works when encryption is absent. If you use a ripper to alter a copy and burn it or make a copy, then you are supposed to destroy any extra copies. Multiple copies get into the troublesome legal arena and I don't want to go there. Your legal rights end with the original licensed software. You keep it, even scratched, or you have no right to a backup. A lot of companies are starting to replace legally obtained software when it is damaged (usually requires registering the original). The gray area is having a copy on the hard drive [as it has to be there (usually) to create a backup copy] and a backup disc. Some ripper programs run from permanent files and others use Temp files (go figure).
