I?m desperate! My external USB 2.0 DVD-RW NEC ND-1300A doesn?t want to burn anymore. I didn?t do a wrong thing. I have a Dell laptop, P4 2.4Ghz / 512Mb / 40Gb and Nero 6. A few days ago, my burner started to fail. I updated the firmware from 1.08 to 1.0A, still nothing. I tried other software like Ulead DVD MovieFactory and DVD to DVDR, still nothing. I put the burner, internally, in a desktop P4 / 512 with Nero 6: the same problem. It stops burning after only 2-5 seconds, when trying to write the lead-in. Nero 6 always says ?RESET OCCURRED?. The other software said ?Problems with the target device?. I can?t figure what it is about. I?ve been searching all over the web, still got no answer. PLEASE HELP!
Thanks!

Thanks a lot, ScubaPete!
I quit using dvdinfopro because it expires too soon. Anyway, I just checked the drive with dvdinfopro, nothing seems to be wrong there, as far as I see. I forgot to tell: the drive fails ONLY when trying to write a video DVD. It burns data DVDs quite well. Also, I forgot to specify the media I used: Ritek G03 DVD-R (2x, I burned about 50 pieces with NEC before the problem occurred) and Princo DVD-RW (1x), both with negative results. I'm still hoping to get some help from you... (the NEC customer service seems to be on vacation).
THANK YOU!

Hi there GILOFFICE, some more thoughts on your problem -
Did you go to Device Manager and delete your drive yet - let your PC find it again. Let's do that -
If you are burning Data discs me thinks your burner is working (Duuuuhhh). What you must understand is that burning a DVD is tons harder than anything else your burner does AND harder that anything else your PC does. When you?re burning MP3 music or Data, you can surf the Internet and Print out charts labels, etc without a hitch - when you?re doing DVD?s, it?s time to shut down any other applications and it?s also a good time to walk away and don?t touch anything -
Speaking about closing applications, go to msconfig and if you?re running XP close everything - If you?re not running XP just leave systray and explorer alone - we want the maximum amount of resources available for our encoding and burning to use -
And, I know you don't want to hear this BUT we need to upgrade your media.
Here?s what you need to know about DVD backup media -
* Cheap media freezes, skips, stutters, pixelats, partially jams, may be rejected and lest we forget, our old standby, giving you the old just refuses to be recognized routine :-(
Besides "Freezing", "skips" and pixelations, many times you?ll get a ?Cyclic Redundancy error? or an "I/O error". This message can mean that your discs are scratched or dirty, it can also mean that your burner won?t accept your ?cheap? media :-(
Another problem which ?pop?s up? is a ?*Power Calibration Error?. This can stop you right in your tracks and most often is caused by, Yep, you guessed it, inexpensive media.
*A ?Power Calibration Error? can also be attributed to the Optical Components of a DVD Writer, though this isn?t usually the case. Trying to shut down your software and ejecting your DVD then restarting your program and re-inserting the same media recently cleaned has been known to help.
Inexpensive media or even average media is great for text, Data, Spreadsheets, .Jpg and .Gif pictures and is good even for MP3 music BUT for DVD backups - BLAaaaaaT! It SUCKTH in an extremely Big-th way !
A good grade media is needed for DVD reproduction !
?Branded? Ritek G04's or Branded Verbatim are what we?re looking for OR any media boasting ?Advanced AZO Metal Dye?, this indicates a superior dye application, while they are sometimes a bit ?pricey? they are acceptable.
Prices online from Meritline.com have gotten Ritek G04 down below a dollar a disc -
Question - If you make coasters out of 3 cheap or even average discs and good copies from 3 ?Branded? Verbatim discs or 3 ?Branded? Ritek G04 discs - which ones then will you say are too expensive ? The 3 ?Cheapo?s with no movie backup OR , the 3 recommended discs with a perfect backup on each disc ?
Bear in mind, Memorex, Fuji, Sony, TDK, Orange Pack and others are quite good for your MP3 music, picture archives, Spread sheets, Data and your text backups and archives, they just don?t work well for DVD backups. Even DataSafe G04?s made by Ritek and Verbatim?s Data Life have been reported as inferior quality.
Remember, for DVD backups, purchasing inexpensive media or even average media is a gamble, some people win, the majority of people lose, varying amounts but, they still lose :-(
Let's try the right media for the job - just buy a 5 pack of what we recommend that will settle it once and for all - Don?t cheat though, buy the EXACT media we recommended, we want you to be successful too remember -
Using good grade media can guarantee you one thing to an absolute certainty, it surely cannot hurt.
cheers,
PS and I say to you, ?Feel the difference.? - Hold a ?No-name? and a Branded Verbatim, - One in each hand and tell me, yea, you tell me that they feel the same - ?NOT !? :D)
STOPGAP FIXES, NOT RECOMMENDED:
1. * There's a little sometimes fix, it's to compress your DVD to somewhere around 4.2GB even. For instance when using DVD Shrink, open it and click ?Edit?, then click ?Preferences? on this page we?re going to select ?DVD Target Size? as custom and set the size as 4200MB By reducing the amount to be burned you can stay away from the edges where the dye tends to be uneven and the discs may be brittle.
2. You can reduce the numbers of errors while burning cheapo media by burning at a reduced speed. It takes longer but what the heck, you?re saving money. Since you?re compressing more it might be wise to burn just the movie, the less you burn the better the quality sooo, movie only, please.
3. Super Cleaning, is a ?sometimes fix? which has been known to sneak a few extra disc into use especially when your PC refuses to recognize the disc. We divide it into 2 parts, the first is to literally clean the discs prior to use, even those fresh out of the pack. Using isopropanol alcohol and a soft cotton cloth and rubbing firmly from the center of the disc outward toward the edge. Continue until the entire disc has been cleaned. Commercial cleaners and solution are available at your local electronics store. Part 2 is to reboot your PC just prior to attempting to insert your disc into the drive ?cleaning out? your clipboard and your RAM memory.
A reminder, play your DVD in your DVD-ROM if you have 2 drives. It?s easier for your PC to read the disc and it is much easier on your DVD burner. The constant stopping and starting of your burner required to read a disc could cause overheating and premature wearing out of your DVD R/W drive. Sooo, use your DVD-ROM for reading and your DVD-RW for cooking

Thank you again, ScubaPete! You really are willing to help!
Yes, I've been reading about using good branded media for video DVD, that's why I ordered 100 pieces of Ritek G04 on EBay (the reason I'm writing on Ritek G03 is that the Ebay seller - son of a b....! - sold me G03s at the price of G04 and when I realized it was too late :-( ). I considered G03 as beeing a good media too since I have burned about 50 video DVDs before the problem occurred.
On the other hand, I don't understand why the problem occurs even if I set the "simulate" mode instead of "write". As I made a lot of coasters, now I only "simulate", but the problem still occurs.
Anyway, I will buy Ritek G04 and Verbatim media and I will give it a try. Also, I will free the system's (P4 / 2.4Ghz / 512Mb PC2100)resources before burning again.
Thanks!

Hey Gilbert, I've been thinking and Ya know, Nero is a good program but gets "flighty at times and needs a "Wack up side the head." - Lets uninstall it, reboot to make sure it's flushed clean and then reinstall it - reboot to let it "settle in" and give that another shot - Also - if you haven't done it - let's begin using RW media until we get this straightened out so that you're not making coasters -
Let me know how you made out :P)

Hello again!
I uninstalled Nero 6 and installed 5.5.10.56 (each after rebooting), which has worked before, but the problem is the same. I noticed something else: when I try to burn a data DVD, Nero asks me if I'm sure I want to make it multisession, because some dvd-roms/OS won't recognize it. If i say "no, don't make it multisession", it fails exactly like when burning video DVDs (the first 2-4 seconds). If I say "Make it multisession anyway", NEC burns it well. I just don't know what to do. Maybe it's a lead-in problem? I repeat, the problem is the same if I put the DVD burner internally in a desktop. I'm thinking about buying another burner... maybe Pioneer 7?
Thanks!
Gilbert
