I am ripping the dvd with Smartripper, then using dvd2avi and finally TMPGEnc. Burning with Nero. Very good results, but....for some reason the volume is too low! I have to have the TV audio at about 2x normal volume. I am not making any adjustments to the audio settings apart from selecting 44100. Should I be adjusting settings somewhere? Any advice please!

Buddytod, you are doing very well! Congrats!

Yep. Your audio-track may be very weak, but that doesn't have anything to do with your ripping/encoding methods - it's just that any given dvd's soundtrack is un-nervingly WIDE in dynamic range. Way too much so for we, mortal folk, the bulk of humanity who use standard, traditional tv's and computers for our playback - to deal with.

You have to compress the soundtrack. (Little option here). When you make your Divx's/VCDs, do you do it all-at-once, or do you process the soundtrack separately & remerge later?

Thanks for replying, Klingon.
No, the video and audio are compiled together within TMPGEnc. I have not tried any other method to date. As I stated earlier, the results I am getting are very impressive, its just the low audio volume letting it down!

Here's the best tip you could hope for in your conversion process. Open up your DVD2AVI project in TMPGENC. Now:

1. Next to LOAD and SAVE at the bottom right, select SETTING.

2. Click ADVANCED at the top of the window that
opens up.

3. Double-Click AUDIO EFFECT in the window.

4. At the bottom left of this window, check
CHANGE VOLUME.

The number underneath this can be anything up
to 171%. I use 171 as a standard as it adds
volume without distortion, and is the max i've
heard do so without trashing the track.

DO NOT CLICK NORMALIZE! If you do, TMPGENC
will cut out some of your sound and the track
will end up with less "impact".

If you want to make sure the level you chose
will not distort, simply click PLAY at the top
right and judge for yourself. Once you are satifsied, click OK and go back to the conversion window, business as usual.

From what you've said, It looks like you use roughly the same method as I do for conversion. The only thing I have trouble with is too much video noise on animated pictures. But as for the audio... your problem should now be solved!
