I have a I/O magic +-RW dvd recorder. I have been using DVDX Copy Platinum to burn movies. I have been using Hypermedia +R which is made by CMC Mag. I was using +R's becuase I was told that they are better than -R's. I told know the truth to that. I have been having to compress alot of these movies. My question is: Is it the quality of the DVD, the program which I use, My DVD recorder that is over a majority of the movies I make all chopped up and locking up? I even bought a new sony dvd player. Any recomedations?

That's probably the answer right there. CMC makes piss-poor media and piss poor media causes skipping and freezing.

I'd recommend getting your hands on some Ritek G04 or Verbatim Metal AZO media, both of which are known quality. Riteks can be had on the net for less than a buck apiece at some sites.

The quality of your copies can also be affected by the quality of your burner, the burner's firmware version and to some extent the software you use.

Not many users here hold Xcopy in high regards.

my dvds used to break up all the time too, not in my sony dvd player but whenever i leant them to someone. So i started to compress them to 4gig with DVD Shrink and burn with DVD Decrypter, i also stopped putting sticky labels on-i think that was the main problem for me.

How true how true!!!

JMO but first check the quality of your media, then check out the firmware version on your burner - try using DVDInfoPro to get the information you need. You might need to upgrade the firmware on your burner. It is worth doing a web search using the details of your drive and the media and/or software you are using.

There are occasions where certain drives and/or firmware versions don't agree with particular types of media.........I am prime example. Liteon LDW411S does not like RitekG04s. But after a bit of researching and modding of the drive I can now burn just about use any software and media with great success.

I started my research with a simple search on google with this as the identifiers:
liteon LDW-411S RitekG04 and gained a wealth of information.

You could do a similar search noting your hardware and just the word media or perhaps your software program and see what you find.

stick on labels and bad media are prime suspects for these cases

why burn with DVD Decrypter rather than just using dvdshrink?

dvdshrink doesn't burn to dvd, you have to use another program like DVD Decrypter, Nero, clone dvd etc.

so... when I click "backup!" on DVD Shrink and it encodes and burns to dvd, is it actually Nero that is doing the burning?

Yes Nero is actually doing the burning, if everything is working right you won't even know it.

Also switch to -R's, you'll find most of the forum folks use these. You just have to try various media and a brand that works for your burner... and stick to it.

Use Nero CD Speed's 'Transfer Test' to check your burn. You want a result like this:

This shows a good mediamatch for my burner.

You don't need special hacks to make good burns. Check your burner's site for a firmware update.

upgrade the firmware on (the) burner.
The solution for Rado03 or anyone else is not going to be the same as mine - unless perchance they just happen to have a Liteon LWD-411S that doesn't burn consistently - on either -R or +R media of any kind. Do the websearch I suggested yourself - you might then see just how common the problem of firmware -v- media is and might be surprised to learn something new today.

I guess I should have said 'modding' and not 'hacking'.

I really don't care about your long winded and self-serving reply. The point of my post was that the burn quality of the media used should be tested for good compatability with one's own burner (seems you either missed that or don't understand the need for it). There are many instances where someone says the media works great, yet someone with exact same model reports poor results. One size does not fit all. There's lots of good media out there, find the best match, using your burner, with this simple test, and stick with it. Although Nero CD Speed may not be the ultimate test, a result like I posted will usually ensure good, consistant results that tend to work in many standalones.

MysticE That's the pot calling the kettle black isn't it?

The point I made was that I hadn't suggested modding or hacking as you put it - merely that firmware upgrading is a good place to start.

Do not ever assume what I do or don't understand......... just shows how limited your post reading is. Here are a few samples of my recent posts: I've included the links to the relevant threads just incase you'd like to cut me off at the knees about something else.

In my situation I found finding the right media - and I am still testing is subject to many variations. What media does your burner like best?

I know there is crappy media out there and good media too - but sometimes we need to think outside the square and have a look at our hardware and firmware too.

On second thoughts - the list of relevant posts would be too big........try a search of my posts and research your information before making assumptions.

Crikey what'd I ever do to you?

The definition of self serving is to be interested only in oneself.

If sharing what information I've learnt in the past to help others is self serving then I guess that's me. I've appreciated all the help and guidance from members here and have passed on what I've learnt in return. I don't mind people making constructive criticism of what I write but I certainly do not have to put up with arrogant people like yourself who like to cut others down just because they believe their opinion is the right one.

Until you have lived as I have, been where I have been and experienced what I have ~ do not have an opinion on nor judge my actions. Many in the same position have not survived!

And that is a direct quote from moi!

Thanx herbsman - I must admit it certainly put me on my back foot for the first time at AD.

How can sticking up for one's self be considered self-serving.........and as for the long winded bit - well anyone who has gotten to know me through these forums knows damm well that I have a problem writing short posts........

hehehehehehe concise isn't exactly a term that I would have acquainted with myself........but thanks anyway herbsman.

The one thing above all others that has kept me coming back to AfterDawn is the generousity and willingness of members to help and guide each other. Ultimately we can only give our thoughts and opinions and leave the reader to make their own decision.

Owing to personal circumstances that have arisen in my life over the last 4 years I am in no way backwards in defending myself should I feel attacked or put-down in anyway.......but I hope I still do so in a civilised manner.
