Sorry if my time is a little more valuable than to backtrach different threads I've seen to provide you with links and quotes. Maybe not this thread in particular, but as a whole, I see it alot. I apologize for not spelling your name correct, it wasn't on purpose. But I will thank-you in advance, Andmerr, for being reasonable, and thinking back to all those posts you've seen. Hopefully therefore remebering what I'm talking about. You'll see it, if you haven't.

Anyway, this is kinda the Official PC Building thread, not worthless squabble thread.

Fanboy is a term used to describe someone who is utterly devoted to a single subject. This generally is followed by the devotion and support even when proved wrong.

Anecdotal, by my definition, it's the way too many people here think. It's also all the evidence you have.

So let's not start any.

With prebuilt computers it's the whole 'peace of mind' vibe, especially if you get special offers on them, but really, any self-respecting gamer would head above the sempron range and to the Athlon64.

About what you've got really. With Pentium III chips over 1.0Ghz, it's more worthwhile upping to a later 478 or 775 motherboard.

I am going with sammorris one this one, it's time for a serious update. You'll find too many compatibility issues too soon, and will have to move up.

Right now, you should get a 939 or 775 board with a AMD Sempron or low end P4 respectively. Then go from there. Semprons are like $60 and the board isn't too much more, add it all up it'll be $500 for a up-to-date XP PC, but then you'll be screwed for vista.

Vista will require 1GB of RAM a 128MB PCI-E Graphics board and a 64 bit CPU, along with a SATA drive that supports NCQ, and a monitor that supports HDCP.

I would suggest saving money until mid 2006 and gettign a vista ready PC loaded with vista. Unless you buy a new PC every year, only the blind buy PCs now, cause they won't be ready. That's exactly what they want, your old comp you just bought trashed and you have to buy one that supports vista.

You'll regret any other choice, and you may regret building your own comp unless your target price is above $1000, it won't save you any money, and nothing is warrented.

You came here for suggestions regarding a computer, the above is probally pretty good advice. Anyone agree?

Vista will definitely require a monster PC, but just because Vista will come out Mid 2006, doesn't mean that anyone who needs a new PC needs to fork out on a big one just fore that. XP will still be on sale after Vista's release - you might as well get a cheap XP machine now.

Yeah, if you are using a P3 right now, a $300 Sempron winXP machine would be a good investment. That's $50 a month for comfortable computing and then the printer can be used, the HD too with a PCI adaptor to it's connector, you won't get sata on a 300 comp. If that's steep, 50 a month until vista, then definitely just wait.

Or, if you're not a gamer, $15 a month for two years. You'd get away with that. My old P3 450 lasted me 3 1/2 years before it needed an upgraded GPU.

I know what you mean but a Pentium 4 is strictly not a celeron. I'm sure you know better than that, but it just came across a little funny.

I've never been into PC gaming, does anyone know what PC gaming with a 7800 GTX 512 can do aaginst the 360. I am definitely trying my luck at buying one withnin the next 12 hours, my heart is already racing, there is one xbox 360 available here for every 1,000 people.

It's a poor comparison considering the Xbox 360 is $400, and id worth it, but if it can beat out PC gaming for the year, that would be great.

Someone here seen both in action? I know you can play the 360 at stores now.

That's quite nice, but for around $150, you're unlikely to find anything better than a 6600GT for now, you'll have to wait until prices of the higher-end GPUs come down. How much so I couldn't say.

Download this program, it tells you everything in your computer.
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Then find your motherboard type, either look on the manufacturers website (probably not compaq, probably ASUS) or report back here with the info.

As far as $150 video card, I got myself for X-mas the Geforce 6800 that can be unlocked to 6800GT extreme specs for $175 from tigerdirect.com cause newegg.com were $10 cheaper but out of them. Thats really close to $150 and better than the 6600

I need someone to tell me what comp. start up kit is better. I am into PC gaming, don't care about loudness and require a processor that can run Doom 3, Serious Sam 2 and Battlefield 2 with no problems.

PLZ have a look at these deals and tell me what would be better.

YO sup lol. Hey im using that cheapo but good e machines, anyway im thinking of upgrading my graphics to an ati 256mb pci-express card, and then upgradign the psu 20 a 450w or a 500w. mostly worried about the compact size of my system, not tiny, but smaller than my old intel. it only has 1 fan other than the psu fan. would it hurt my comp if I took off the side pannel and gut through the metal to make a spot for a 120mm fan? obviously i would take the pannel off first lol. dont think it will really hurt the system jsut adding a fan but wanted to make surelol. also since most of the stuff im getting will eb for X-MAS >< what is a cpu upgrade from a amd 64+ 3200, that is good for gaming and reasponably priced? ty for u help, i know what needs to be in a comp but not whats best or always how to put it in lol.
