Ok. Well i couldnt get round to getting my PC checked today, and i definatly wont be able to for a few days now, so i have come up with something else.
What if i use my other PSU (from my other PC) to see if that works?
Its only 250W so i will only run the bare minimum of my new build (no case fans).
My question is, if i do this, will it damage anything else? or create further damage?
If it has the potential to, then i wont even try. but if it will be ok, then i will try, then i can defo rule out that its not the motherboard, and see if any other components are working propery.

If it is the motherboard, then adding another PSU will only worsen the problem. I wouldn't risk it really.

I have emailed the guy who i bought the motherboard of, no reply as yet.
i will get in contact with ASrock, the manufacturer of the motherboard later today.
I didnt see any garentee or warrenty card in the motherboard box. But i will still take it up with them.

I have an old PC knocking around. I could put my new PSU into that and see if it works. Then i will be able to rule out that its my PSU (if it works).
And then definatly know its the motherboard.

I cant put my new PSU into my old PC. The only connectors that fit are the IDE ones. Most of the other connections seem to be waay out dated.
(i did say it was _old_)

Well it must be very old for that to be the case, but older PSUs typically won't have the correct number of connectors to plug in to a system, and if the motherboard is faulty, trying another PSU will only make matters worse. I'm surprised not even an ATX plug fits, even an old Dell Dimension 700mhz PC I borrowed had one.

on a lot of new motherboards there is provision for channeling sound and mic to the front of the computer
if these are connected wrongly then they can also cause damage to the motherboard

Woo!
I got it all sorted out now.
I had it checked out, and the guy couldnt find anything much wrong with it.
He changed something and it works fine now.
Cost me £40, not bad really.

[I am looking to build my own PC. Ok I have everything chosen until now but I have a question about MotherBoards. Is there a difference in performance between the Micro ATX and ATX motherboards?And if so what is the differences other than it is smaller?

Well, lol my point has been made now, the question was contained in my previous post. Is anything being done to improve the occasional slowdowns in the operation of the site? Appreciably the servers to maintain a site like this must be enormous, but those periods of down time are annoying when you can end up double or triple posting.

Sorry for not being able to reply, been away!
I didnt actually find out what was wrong - or why the motherboard produced smoke in the first place.
After getting it all checked out, the guy said he had changed a few settings on the motherboard - and thats it.
I have no need to send the motherboard back because no problems (as yet) have arisen from this.
So now i have it all setup, with a HUGE 19" CRT (i know... crt) but im really pleased with it as my first build!

Mine cost me £40 :D and its running at 1600x1200 @ 85Hz. Not a bad deal, plus i prefer CRT over LCD or plasma for gaming.

That's a high spec monitor that can do 85Hz at 1600x1200, I think the G90 can only do 75 at that resolution. What screen is it?

ok this is very rare the rams in my computer are constantly failing
i got pny 512 ddr400 and it failed like a month later
kingston 512 ddr400 failed like month and a half
transcend 1gb ddr400 failed like in a month
really rare here's my board

IMO if you're motherboard is potentially damaging memory chips through this that and the other, then it MIGHT be wise to change the board. However, it would be wise to check the reading of the 3.3V line on your power supply as well. If you haven't already got one, download a free hardware monitor program and inspect the readings at regular intervals. If sometimes they're a fair bit higher than they should be, or of course lower, then you might want to consider changing the power supply. If they're pretty good (+/-5%) then the motherboard is the most likely cause.

hi - hope this the right place for this question . . .
I've been trying to put together a parts list for a new gaming computer and this is what I got so far. This will be my first build and I need lots of help, I'm sure. Look over my list and let me know if everything is compatible or if anything is overkill. And thanks alot for the help!
