It depends. Did you mention AOE3? The X1800GTO is a hell of a lot better card than the X800GTO, but of course US pricing is different to UK pricing, so the difference is far more where you are. It's up to you, the X800GTO will run out of steam long before the 1800.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I've decided to hold off on my computer build for now. Instead I am going to wait for this to happen....
http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=2800
If the price of the X2 3800+ really does drop to $169 at the end of July as this article suggests, then I will apply those extra savings toward the better graphics card. Plus the only reason I picked the mobo with the ati chipset was because newegg had a bundle deal that lowered the price of the X2 3800+ by 50 bucks. Since with the price slashes taht won't be as important...maybe i'll look into a Geforce mobo instead. I guess either is good.
Just got my 20 inch viewsonic in today. Looks pretty nice - although I don't have a modern graphics card right now that is DVI compatible. That'll have to wait until August when I update my new build I guess.
If there was a dead pixel on my new monitor, would it be pretty obvious? Or is there a way that I can test for that? I'd like to do it soon so I can return the monitor if I have to. But everything looks good to me.

Hi again Doug,
I'm not nearly as hardware savvy as most of these fellas but I do know what works for me so since you might be considering a different motherboard I thought I'd also mention that I picked up an MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum to go with my 4200+ and it's a dandy for not much money.

Sure. Even on a monitor of that size, if there's a dead pixel, you'd notice. On a Viewsonic, it's unlikely.
Zalman must make a fortune out of us lot.

Thanks for all the very informative posts everyone. I appreciate it.
I'll try that dead pixel testing program tonight. The monitor is beautiful. Only problem is that my computer is painfully outdated and my grpahics card only supports analog. Plus it's a piece of garbage, so it doesn't have the juice to make the monitor NOT lag. DVDs are unwatchable at this point. But I can wait a couple months for my new build. With the new savings on the the AMDs, i'll get a solid graphics card and everything should be nice.
Will I need any special cooling system with the new build I've mentioned in prior posts? Or will solid case fans be sufficient? Those water coolers look cool, but I have no idea how they work - plus they probably consume a lot of energy and will run up my bills....never good. haha.

That monitor can run games at resolutions even fast cards struggle to deal with. I'd never advise water coolers, despite testing and all that, leaks just aren't something I like to think about. Considering fans do almost as good a job with little more noise, they're a far better and cheaper alternative imho.

Awesome...happy to hear confirmation that it's just the graphics card that is making the monitor lag and not the monitor response time or something else. That's what I figured anyway. This thing looked incredible in the store.
I'm very eager to upgrade. But patience and discipline saves you money in the end. haha

Yeah, that's the way it goes. An integrated graphics machine versus a PCI express dedicated DVI video machine shows far more lag on the same screen.

Maybe i'm an idiot or just don't have a sharp eye...but I used that dead pixel tester and couldn't find a single dead pixel. I guess ONE dead pixel would not be noticeable anyway. SOunds like a bunch of hype to me. People paranoid that their stuff isn't flawless.
In any case, the screen looks great. Excited to see it connected digitally though. Pixels seem somewhat large to me right now. But I assume that's due to my hideous graphics card and the analog connection. Even so...the freakin size and width of this beauty is fun and glorious enough. haha

I'm not surprised with a Viewsonic, even pikey monitors don't often have dead pixels.

Most people know of the ASUS A8R32-MVP and ATI 3200 cross fire on the socket 939, but most people do not know that 3200 was made for the AMD M2 boards and does out perform NVIDIA in this new generation, just in cost alone, this boards out perform most out there, and are some new patches being made for performance video linking witch NVIDIA has none, so if you like gaming plus HDTV, and NVIDIA has along way to go, ATI has it all for the multi media center 2 cards thats is all tuner & video plus you get all the goodies, remote, tv, HDTV, video editing, gaming, and all in auto settings, no need for tweaking, just go to and some of the facts but wait till August when the new boards come out I know there is nothing being said a bought it you will see here is the link http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2767 , it is a new ball game, a true multi media center, and there is a great support for Linux, and just wait for SUSE next generation that is all.

This is ture, for proper video stuff, I'd recommend ATI, even if nVidia may get you a higher number of frames per second that you can count on one hand.

Your video card would only take system memory if it was Hypermemory or Turbocache enabled. Your 6600s might be, and if they are, then "512MB" would mean 256MB, but can take 256MB of system memory to make 512. Do this twice for SLi, and you're down 512MB in windows...

Hey guys,
This is my first time building a computer, but I think its gonna be my most inexpensive path so ill lay it out for you pros :D
Budget: Nothing more than 500$
Noise: Right now I have a compaq thats pretty noticeable in terms of noise, and it annoying sometimes so id like something quiet.
And usage: For short term Id like to play World of Warcraft on this computer, id also like it to be fairly upgradable and be able to keep up with chipsets in the next few years.
Here is what I came up with so far:
Case: Linkworld 435-10 C2228 Black & Silver Steel/Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 430W Power Supply - Retail $25
HD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3808110AS 80GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM $50
Mobo: BIOSTAR TForce 6100 AM2 Socket AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $74
Vid. Card: Leadtek WinFast PX7300GT TDH Geforce 7300GT 256MB GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail $89
RAM: 2x pqi 512MB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5400) Unbuffered System Memory Model MAC412UOE - Retail $63
CPU:AMD Athlon 64 3200 Orleans 2000Mhz HT AM2
Thanks for any feedback i get in advance.

Nah, don't get a PSU that came with the case, it will definitely be noisy, it will suck and it will break. Pure and simple, get something like a low output Seasonic if you're after quiet. They're not totally silent but they're very good.
Unless you're un upgrade-a-holic, you may as well get socket 939.

After changing mobo, i had to put aside my audio card due to the fact it block the fan to my video card, so I used the on board audio and now I hear clicking sounds coming from the speakers... this has never been an issue in the past... Sounds to me like a grounding issue- A friend did most the work for me due to time issues in my life... any suggestions?

what is Pff? You mean to tell me that this $200.00 Mobo can not do better then this? MAN that sucks... there is no room with dual video cards... so you dont think it a grounding problem?
