A set of connections that graphics commands run down. The more you have the better the card will perform, and more to the point, the better the card will perform in the future.

Oops!
I didn't finish what I started writing, I meant to say the better the card will perform in the future.

the more pixel pipelines, the less of a bottleneck, (if you can call it that), anotherwards, more than 12 is good and 16 or more is excellent, anotherwars, the more pipelines the better..
the more you video card can produce in that instant..
thanx,

I am looking to build a new system and would like some suggestions. I am looking to stay under 1000 dollars. This system will be mainly used for gaming, ripping dvds, and photo shop pro. So I will want something with great graphics and as fast as possible. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ye but its not just the pipelines. The pipelines are how fast the card can send the info. So u need a good card to make pipelins more worth while!
Why have a big bottle neck if youve got nothing to pour!

True but the X800GTO is fast enough to make use of 16 pipelines I think.

Anyway if it is. It barely reaches it. And no way explores the full potential of 16 pipelines.

You're suddenly all very negative, is there an alternative you'd like to suggest?
boilaz003: have a look through the last half a dozen pages of this thread, the majority of people coming here say "I want a new system for about $1000" and we've given them some guidance so check it out, but the basis is an Athlon64 x2 3800+, an Asus A8N5X mobo perhaps, some high end graphics card like a 7800GT or X1800XT and maybe a 250GB seagate hard disk with 2x1GB Corsair RAM.

No sorry if it came across that way. I was just trying to show (which i did badly) how if your looking for a good video card. Its not just the pipelines.
Basicallyi didnt want the guy to go looking for a crad that had all theese pipelines but couldnt use them.
Thats all. Sorry for being a bit of a negative person just then.

well of course, no, a slow card with loads of pipelines is useless, but I can't really speak from that point of view because my X1900XT has the three-shaders-per-pipeline on it, and I'm not entirely sure what effect that has.
Have you actually got 3Ghz out of your 3700??? HOW?

Ye i squeezed it out of it. And it was mildy stable. It ran benchmarking tools quite well. But after an hour or so of gaming it got a little too hot!!!
So basically im running it now at 2.8Ghz and that runs games fine. Never passing 50 degrees. So basically ive squezed a stock FX-57 out of it.
Impressive. I think anyway. Il send a screenshot later if you want.

My system is as follows... Dual Opteron (dual cores), 4 gb ram, SCSI u320, 1 x XFX GeForce 7950 (running two LCD's). I've been considering XP Pro, but I hear XP Pro doesn't really take advantage of 4 GB ram (only two). Any help will be greatly appreciated.

As you will soon find out... XP will only read so much ram... but that does not mean it does not use the unreadable ram... just went though this! On my machine in bios it reads the total but minus 512 because of the daul video cards... hence I will soon add 2 more gigs of ram

ok I've been looking at cases, but I cant seem to find one that I like. i was wondering if anyone could suggest one.
I wanted one with a temp display, but the only ones I've been seeing all have a door thing on the front that you have to open to reach the optical drives and.or floppy. The thing is already going to be in a cabinet in my desk so I dont need another door to open just to use my optical drives >_<.
It doesnt have to have a side window or anything because, as i said before, its gonna be in a cabinet and noones gonna see it lol.
Also im getting a separate poswer supply so i guess i dont need a case taht coems with one. i suppose i could always swap em out if i found a good case with a power supply.
one other thing: was wondering if this is a good monitor to get:
