8 is big enough for OS as long as you dont install any apps or programs on that partition. Our IT guy at work set us with new computers and partitioned like that but with programs he put on the same partition stupidly, the partition is too big to defrag because you need at least 10% of it free to do.
As for your problems joker, I'd say you only set up 1 partition instead of 2 on that drive with OS. You did one thats 8 but did you do the other 72? Check disk manager, click your START button<right click MY COMPUTER<MANAGE and see if you can partition the remaining space.
As for the one that doesnt show at all, does it show in the startup BIOS screen? I dont think drivers are the problem or it wouldnt see the 1 with OS on it (unless a totally different model or brand check updates).

A guide to setting up partitions correctly is here for you.
If the 72GB is showing as unallocated, then jst run through the windows partition wizard.

Thanks. I had to set up a partition for the other 72 gigs and format the 200 gig drive. All are now online.

Going back to the 8 gig os partition. When possible I try to install all software on the 72 gig partition, however a lot of drives (ati apps) just install everything on the C: drive. I am down to 1.25 gig on the C drive and I have yet to install office, Firefox etc.

Should I just take my loss now and reinstall the os on a bigger partition?

Try to find a used copy of Partition Magic. This is a great app you will always use. You can change partition sizes, combine them, set new ones, etc., all with data on the drive.

BigDK---great link.
Joker---thats exactly what I was talking about. Try doing a disk defrag with that (with Windows defrag, I'm sure people have 3rd party apps that would do it).
If you are just starting the process maybe you want to start over and double the partition size, or go through your programs that make temp files and reroute them to your other partition or SATA-2 thats now working.

When I was reloading my OS I deleted the partition off my PATA drive which was my storage drive. I did not format the drive. Is there any way to recover this data?

Pvt...I've done a lot of data recovery. The best solution I have found is S/W offered by Runtime Software. It does not write to the HDD it is recovering from, and this is an important consideration. http://www.runtime.org/ GetDataBack for NTFS

The Partition Magic S/W I mentioned above sells for $10 to $20 on eBay. It is a utility that I constantly find a use for. It can help you avoid a number of disc management problems like you have just encountered.

Is there any free or cheaper software out there?

I have come across freeware recovery solutions, but they were beyond my level. I can tell you that if you didn't format the drive, the data is still there, and GDB NTFS will get it for you. It might come down to how important that data is.

i've recovered info from a formated drive & ghosted drive.

PvtJoker, should start a thread on your problem in this forum or in the windows forum further down as this has nothing to do with pc building.

Handy Recovery will do the trick. Once they process my card for $30 I should have all the data restored.

Thanks all.

Question.

After great difficulty I found out that I had a bad Hiper 580 PS. I had replaced it with a BFG power supply.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817702003

However I had to purchase that ps at bestbuy and pay their $40 mark up.
I still need to send the Hiper ps back to newegg. Should I just get another Hiper PS or should I just keep the BFG?

wyntre: The manufacturers for graphics cards are only really relevant if one offers a better deal or cooler. Most manufacturers use the same coolers for graphics cards, but some use their own better ones, and some their own worse ones, so you need to be careful of that. There's no need to match the brand of the graphics card with the chipset really.
herrick: I never ran the system with the stock fan I'm afraid, so I wouldn't know, but it runs about 36-40C idle (room temp dependant, my room's quite hot with no A/C) and 46-56 load (the 56 was full load on both cores for 3 hours in a 32C room). It runs great for a lightweight and inexpensive cooler. Best cooler you can buy's an Arctic Freezer64 Pro though, I only got this because the arctic wasn't available for my build... :-( 20.1" is the size for all 20" monitors, for some reason they gave you an extra 0.1" free!

Dougisjc: Did I miss it? The cart's empty, suppose it was 5 days ago :-( If you haven't built already though, NZXT Lexa! LOL I'd agree with aabbccdd about what you posted later though, that's a killer system. I would recommend the X1900XT card from personal experience, it's quite reasonably priced at newegg (especially compared to the UK!) and will beat a 7800GTX performance and image-quality wise. The 4200+ is a great CPU, so stick with that.
Lecsiy: There's a power good pin in the ATX connector. If you feel like risking it, short the power good signal to the standby voltage signal. I forget whether they're ground-to-run or live-to-run, I'll have to look that up.
FIHSNERD: I'm back... for a while.
PvtJoker: 8GB is enough for windows XP, you'll need to make the other partition before you can see it in Windows, else the other 72GB is sitting unused. You'll also need to make a partition on the 200GB drive to see it.
PvtJoker: No!!! I don't believe it! You're the very first one to have one. I'm disappointed.
kikn: Save yourself some money and go X1900Xt rather than 7900GTX (especially if ordering from newegg) and avoid a 150GB Raptor really (they cost tonnes!) Go for a 250GB Caviar SE16. What you have left use on a faster CPU.

Hands up who's noticed I write my posts in notepad? LOL

The 16MB cache isn't really the active element of the price,it's the 10,000rpm speed. The best hard disks to buy now are the 500GB 16MB 7200rpm ones, they're under $200, and have other 3x the capacity of a raptor and amazingly, are almost as fast, and make half the noise. The Caviar SE16 is one of these candidates. The Zalman 9500 is a fantastic cooler, but a bit overkill if you don't need it lol. The Freezer 64 Pro is also worth a look, dirt cheap, performs well and doesn't weigh a tonne!
Thanks for the welcome, I appreciate it, most people have, funnily enough, except the staff of course. That figures.

hello everyone.. i am back myself.. but it seams my enjoyment away has lead to goods and bads.. i got myself a nice HOTT girlfriend named Maura, and i got my car, and we went to a couple parties and football games. but that is all short lived as when i come home, play on my compy for a couple hours :) My LCD fries.. so i am back on a 19" 17" viewable monitor.. .but hey the quality is better than the old 20" i had.. :)

but how is everyone .. and when in the hell is the MODS going to open up AMD vs. INTEL again... I am really starting to get pissed of about that..

BUT>>> schools a bitch.. Lifes a bitch... MODS are bitches...
and MY mom is bitcheeee..

"MODs are bitches"? You didn't expect to get away with that did you? LOL even I didn't push it that far! For an off-topic rant that was hardcore.
Bad luck about the monitor though!

aabbccdd: You don't see the DVI input from the BIOS, does it appear afterwards? With some cards I hear that they don't display the digital output until Windows loads, something like that. It didn't hold true for me, but maybe that's what's happening to you? Or has it only just started?
