I have not found anything indicating there will be OEM firmware upgrades for DL. I would expect to see hacked firmware available eventually.
The DL burner from Sony appears to have the same chipset as other SL burners so it will no doubt be possible. Time will tell. Still waiting on my new Sony burner. I hope it ships soon! No DL media available yet though. If you find any, let me know!

Cheers,
Frank

It seems truly mad that there's no dl media gonna be available to try this burner out !!
Good luck with your new burner, Frank, let us know how it performs. No compression would be very nice !!

Unfortunately I am a nut about wanting to have the newest and latest toys. So, I expect I'll be ordering a dual layer DVD burner and the media for it as soon as they are available...Hey, I put together 5 computers with a total of 8 DVD burners so far...I've got one in just about every room of the house. That all comes from the left side of my brain. On the other hand...the right hand side - which always loses out...- is shouting at me that I probably won't ever REALLY need the 2 layer DVD burner because every movie I would ever want to burn would still look just fine compressed at 80% and would therefore fit perfectly on an ancient 'single layer' DVD burner that will probably end up costing about 30 bucks...Of course I won't listen...

siber, I know exactly what you mean! Well the burner I ordered finally shipped, so I should be getting it in a few days. Out with that old Pioneer A-07 and in with the new Sony! I think this will be my sixth burner in a year. I always pay twice as much for a new gadget. This Sony cost $216.79 from SonyStyle.

Dene, I think Sony and the other manufacturers are racing each other to be the first out there with DL. Phillips/BenQ should be along shortly. I think their product is going to ship with a few discs.

I went over to the Verbatim web site and their double layer media should be avalible by the end of the month.

D/L burners & media. I am just thinking whats the point to it?. Yes Zero compression would be nice but HONESTLY how many DVD's really look THAT bad after compression, not many in my opinion. (Especially as I use DVD rebuilder/CCE on "difficult" movies). I, personally, enjoy the challenge of backing up my DVD's. Dual layer would provide a "zero" challenge option, where would the fun be in that? The only thing to consider would be the desired "layer break" position. Big yawner!!!!

I refuse to be dragged in, yet again, on the bottom rung of the ladder with this new technology. I bought my first CD burner, a 2X then 4x, 8x etc. These hardware companies are not going to fleece me yet again, with marginal improvements on speed & reliability. I have had enough of their blatant exploitation of the masses.

If i did manange to get my 107d to burn D/L via firmware update, I would simply use it to put 2 movies on 1 disk.

brian100: I couldn't have said it any better! But I'm just such a nut for new toys...fasfrank and I will probably figure out a way to explain why we really do need a dual-layer burner...

Believe me, I blame no one for keeping up with new technology. I used to be just like yourself, it sure is fun being the first to try these things.

I am also worried about the (potential) quality of this new media, although that's something for future discussion. It is sure going to be fun reading peoples experiences with it, I will just sit back and have a nice giggle. I just hope it isnt going to be as hit and miss as when DVD-r S/L first appeared.

Right now I am burning seasons one, two and three of CSI. Each season has six discs with about 2.9 hours of material on each disc. The compression number using Shrink is 57.6%, keeping the menu and extras. Removing the menu and extras yields a number of 58.6%. I could split each disc into two and end up with 36 discs. I could use a different encoding method and spend eight hours on each disc. I just use Shrink and Deep Analysis. The quality is not great to say the least.

Sounds like hard work that, If I were you Id wait for a dual layer burner LOL (I swear by the "duck & cover" method")

Being serious here, what you have just mentioned is probably the only benefit for the use of dual layer disks IE Episodic disks.

Yep I did The Sopranos, X-Files, and Sex in the City. All 3 had at least 1 disc that looked terrible even without menus.
