Hi everyone, I'm just wondering what everyone optimal compression percent when using DVD Shrink to rip..

Sometimes, I can't decide at what percent should it drop to before I should just get the movie only and span it over 2 DVDs instead of getting everything on at like 50-60%?

I did a couple of movies at 50-60% compression and it seems to be okay, but sometimes during a really fast action scene, it gets pixelated.

Just wondering whats everyone's views and experience on this is..
thanks.. btw, if this topic has been discussed already, I'm sorry, tried to search but didn't find anything

50-60% is a lot. I'll do a movie only back-up at 80% or lower. If you want to really see the difference just put the original in your player, play the movie a bit and pause it. Now use the zoom on the remote. Now try the same thing with your copy. You should be able to see the results of the compression. Using less compression reduces the effects you may notice.
Whether this is acceptable during playback is up to you.

Shrink has a Deep Analysis feature that helps the program more accurately estimate the amount of compression required so be sure to use that when applying lots of compression. It helps somewhat.

I'll split a movie at 60% or lower. I don't have to do that very often. I prefer to keep my back-ups on one disc.

Cheers,
Frank

this may just be in my head but different movies seem to have different qualities. for example lord of the rings 2 at about 55% with deep analyses was a good picture. bad boys 2 at 70% had pixelation without deep anylysis. have a look at what you gain by losing the menus, sometimes its not a lot so just do deep anylisis and take what you get but if you can gain a lot you can always put some basic menus/chapter selection on in TMPGEnc video author.

I agree with Philip 51, If you remove a bunch of BS extra features and have a bunch of room left, why not expand your horizons a bit with some menu creation?

If you really want to make nice menus and don't mind learning a new program, take a look at DVD Lab Pro. It is in beta right now so the trial is free. The retail price will be $199.00.

I have had good results with 60% but will still use down to 55% with deep analysis. I have absolutly no visible problems but I have to use good DVDs to get the best picture with the higher compession. Vebatim is my favorite but Riteks have been good to me.

Some midrange DVDs that work well at 80% plus have intermitant pixelation when the compression is higher.

When I want to leave out extras but have functional menus I use Nero recode. It is simple to use.
