I've four (AoA, Imtoo, Aimersoft & Ultra) dvd ripping programs. Right now NONE of them will
rip DVD to DivX Avi. All seem to convert just fine to other formats... just not avi. Anyways, all either crash/fail right away with no reason stated or an error such as 'Cannot open AVI file'. How can it fail to open an avi file that doesn't even exist yet? The programs are supposed to CREATE this file.

Here's what I've done.

Uninstalled all ripper programs. Uninstalled DIVX, & K-Lite packages. Ran a couple registry cleaners. Ran my antivirus program and SEVERAL adware/malware programs. All is clean. I then reinstalled the LATEST DivX Codecs and the LATEST K-Lite package. Then I installed the ripper programs again. Still the same problem exist. ALL the rippers will rip to a different formats, but NONE will rip to DivX Avi.

I've searched for hours online trying to find a solution to this. Several people seem to have the same issue, but I've found no solutions. I've no other pc problems that I'm aware of, everything seems to work just great other than ripping dvd's to divx (avi) format.

Please Help!! Sincerely, GDA.

The only 2 ripping programs I trust are either AnyDVD or DvdFab. They can rip the movies to a video_ts folder, and from there, you can use a program like either autogk or handbrake to convert your dvd files to avi.

Here is a link to using autogk.

Thanks for your response. I may eventually try something else; however, I prefer at this time to try and get my programs to work vs trying out another one.

I put one of the ripper programs on my netbook and it rips to DivX Avi just fine. Takes a loooong dang time to do it though. Both systems have Windows XP Pro, the same DivX & K-Lite Codecs, so I'm a little baffled.

Again, I may try a different route in the future, but I know that others have this same problem too with no solution offered thus far. I'm hopeful this thread will finally lead to a fix that others with this issue will find and be able to remedy.

strewth.. it takes a long time on a netbook?.. I'm honestly not surprised at all... They aren't designed for this kind of heavy cpu intensive job.

guess you know these useless programs are what is known as "spammerware" ?? AoA, Imtoo, Aimersoft & Ultra .. all pointless things designed to entice n00bs to buy things which don't actually work..

Why not try bitripper (edited by ddp) .. a little faster than dvd-fab but it can't handle any modern disc protections.. so rip that disk first to an iso before attempting to convert or you will have no dvd drive left after 3 or 4 day long read sessions.

put linux on your netbook.. you will find having more than 2% system resources left over after the operating system loads will let acidrip do the job a lot faster... will still take hours and hours, but you will have more than 640k of ram left over to run the job.

You my friend are the classic example of somebody using crap programs on unsuitable hardware .. You may want to "get what you have working" but really you are wasting your time.. Get a shit kicking pc which is up to the job.. (I used to transcode on a home built 64 node neumann variant cluster supercomputer.. divx to mpeg2 .. 3 hours of video in 2 minutes or less), get with the program with proper working applications, because you ain't goin nowhere with that lot you got now, just wasting time with underpowered junk running spammerware ;)

hope that puts it in perspective for you.. just a dose of realism.

Why not try bitripper (oh yes.. I have a cracked one on a vm and it works pretty good) .. a little faster than dvd-fab but it can't handle any modern disc protections.. so rip that disk first to an iso before attempting to convert or you will have no dvd drive left after 3 or 4 day long read sessions.

Couple responses here... imagine that! :)

First off, I knew the netbook would take awhile. I just wanted to see if it would even start the process since my tower won't even do that.

Second... While the programs I've been trying to use may indeed be 'crap' I do not believe my overall system could be classified as such. No, it's not a supercomputer like you have and I'm no longer top-tier as I used to be. My pc is 5-6 years old now (did build it myself). I've a P-4 3GHz Processor, 1.5G of Ram, two 200G Hard Drives, blah, blah. It was a VERY FAST machine several years ago, but now it's falling behind some. I do concur with that. To call it 'crap'; however, I believe is not warranted though. It's still a pretty damn decent machine.

I'm in the process of checking out DVDFab. Looks promising. My issue with the 'crap' programs is that they should still at least WORK... even if crappily so. It just makes me wonder what else is not working right no my computer.

PS. I don't have the funds to build another up-to-date blazing fast pc. I wish I did. Maybe you could donate your supercomputer to me and build another for yourself? :)

GDA63378, not the tower's fault as it should be able to do it with those specs so check your software as it is the problem.

Update:

I finally bit the bullet and have upgraded my computer. AMD Phenom II X6 2.8GHZ Processor, 8G of Ram, Win-7 64-Bit OS, & some other bells/whistles. Didn't upgrade because of this particular issue, but seems more & more I have problems with this older setup and figured it was time... just didn't wish to do a format restore.

Still yet to get this new pc completely up & operational, but close. Have all DVD rippers installed and they all rip to avi format just fine. Also have DVDFab, but AoA Ripper I think is a little faster! I've yet to rip the same DVD on each ripper and compare times/quality. Will do that in the future.

Even though this issue wasn't solved, I thank all who responded.

Sincerely, GDA.

Ok, figured I'd inform anyone interested of VERY BASIC rip testing I conducted on five separate DVD to AVI programs. I've listed the program, output size, the time to covert, and my own personal perceptions of quality. All rippers I used to convert the DVD were set to AVI output (DivX option enabled if was present). For DVDFab I also used the h264 option. I used the same DVD movie for each rip. The DVD Movie itself was 1Hr 28Min long.

Aimersoft DVD Ripper: 1.03GB - 26 Minutes - Pic quality wasn't stellar.
AoA DVD Ripper: 931MB - 56 Minutes - All looked good, no complaints.
ImTOO DVD Ripper: 842MB - 44 Minutes - Looks good. AOA little sharper maybe.
ULTRA DVD to MP4: 540MB - 40 Minutes - Poorer video quality.
DVDFAB DIVX: 1.11GB - 21 Minutes - Nice video, audio was out of sync.
DVDFAB h264: 877MB - 15 Minutes - Nice video, audio was out of sync.

I did not do any tweaking of any settings... I think I used the default AVI settings for every ripper I used. Tweaking will most probably change the time, quality, etc. This was strictly a simple BAREBONES approach of comparing the products. Will likely do some more testing in the future, maybe will post the results if anyone is interested.

If I had to make a decision on which of these programs to use based strictly on this simple test/comparison, I'd say AoA DVD Ripper would be my ripper of choice for converting to avi. It did take the longest though and everyone's times will be different due to processor speeds, etc.

Hope this was at least somewhat useful.
