What is the best way to get a great computer?
Just curious, cause I'm thinking of buying a new comp this summer and I was wondering if anyone would like to help me buy the right one. It would be great if I can know the price too. Thanx for All your wonderful help...

do you want a computer or a notebook ?
Also it would be a much better deal and would be cheaper and better to build the computer yourself. Also if your going to buy a coputer dont buy from future shop crcuit city radishack go and find some computer store not a big one just some private computer store you will get a better deal there

What will your computer be used for ?
What is your budget ?
Building the computer yourself usually works out cheaper. The only advantage computer packages have is that it usually comes bundled with software, but then they usually put shit components in the computer itself.

To me, the biggest advantage of building your own is the fact that you can put in exactly what you want. With a factory box you kinda get what you want along with an unholy nightmare of crippled apps and offers for internet, mp3 sites, viagra and real estate on the moon.
You don't get the pride and satisfaction of building your own when you buy a Dell :)

Is spending around $1.5k enough to build a comp to have speed, internet, gaming, etc...
Also where do you buy these pieces...
Is the internet the best place? If so can someone suggest a site?

I built my current PC entirely through newegg.com and have since ordered numerous peripherals and upgrades since without a single problem or unhappy experience. The only problem I had wasn't their fault, it was a poorly designed vid card, and their RMA process was dead simple and fast. They sent me a different style card with no questions or hassles inside of a 10 days. I won't shop anywhere else. Their prices are usually among the lowest and even if I can find the same thing for a few bucks less somewhere else I'm not willing to risk a horrible experience over a few bucks.

I havnt had direct contact with TigerDirect but I've heard some really good things about them. I have had personal experience with xOxide and I heartily reccomend them (for some of the kewler parts, you gotta be on the ball though cuz they do run out of stock real fast).

Do anyone of you know what you'd buy if you were to build a computer? Cuz there's alot of items and I'm having trouble picking what's right for me...
I've looked at the three sites that have been posted ^ there...Any hints that you could give me on what to buy? Thanx for all your time...

Store bought computers are generally mediocre unless you spend at least a couple of thousand dollars. Avoid Pc's that have integrated sound and graphics (especially graphics) or at least make sure that the board has an accelerated graphics port. The best bet is to either build it yourself or find someone who can be trusted to do it. Homemade computers are usually better.

I buy almost all my stuff with cash (i.e., not online) so I cant help ya with that -- I think it would be a better idea to establish a working relationship with a small computer store -- Ive been getting my stuff from one or two places for the last ten years and now I can pretty much walk in, name my price and as long as im not being stupid about it, walk out (after paying of course!) :)

Yep i do the same Praetor.
I have been using the same supplier for over the last 3 years or so, and never had a problem with them.
They also give me a discount and so often as i order sooo much stuff.
All i have to do is ring them, they know straight away who i am and order it away.
Easy as that
And yes i do pay as well..., i wish i could just walk out without paying though :P

I began my early builds (1990s) by working with a local parts store but I learned in time that their prices weren't that competitive. I now buy virtually everything from Newegg.com, they generally offer better prices, pay no sales tax, most of the product includes free delivery, on site product reviews by users, and a selection that is better than all the PC stores in my area combined.

Yes indeed, non-online purchases are very region-specific and also depend on the type, number and extent of the contacts you have in the reatil/wholesale industry. If you are wary/unable to get online purchases there are three other options:
1. Get a friend to get it for you
2. Order it from a store -- sure you may have to pay $20 or something on top but you also have a little more security and self-assurance of your purchase
3. Goto computer shows: this is how i do it now: with rock bottom prices one cant go too wrong.

I enjoy computer shows but the ones I've been to are crowed with sleazy vendors. I've been very happy shopping at Newegg, they have excellent return policies and customer service. I've looked everywhere in my area for a decent PC supply outlet and there are a couple that are ok but I still save shopping online.

I believe newegg will take money orders.
newegg ships fast too. They're based in City of Industry, CA and since I live in Phoenix many times I'll get my stuff before I get the e-mail saying it's been shipped :)

Yes they do accept money orders but they must clear (common sense) before shipping your order.

Glad I could help -- just a thought however: dont just buy one comp mag, get a couple. Computer mags, like people's suggestions, tend to be tailored for the audience that the magazine was intended for (i.e., MaxPC tailors to the more hardcore, expensive systems while something like PC Mag is more for the mainstreamer looking for ideas for their new system)
