Can an NTSC-dvd damage a PAL supporting television?

I'm about to purchase a region free dvd-player and a R1 dvd that supports NTSC but I have a PAL supporting TV. So can an NTSC-dvd somehow damage my PAL television? And how much worse is the picture than with a PAL-dvd?

My UK relatives say that their PAL players (and TVs)can handle NTSC DVDs without problems (the region coding is a separate issue for the DVD player).
