I was gunna get this new DVD player at my local Costco. Its the only player that I have seen that actually says plays dvd-r's on it. But know that I read the specs (below) it says it only plays dvd-r's/dvd-rws in video mode only and plays +r's and +rw's in playback mode? I still have to use my stuff on video mode...what is the difference from vid to playback mode?

Go down to costco's and ask to try it, in the store, with a few your backups. Play the last few chapters to see if there is any picture freezig etc. See if the darn thing works!!. If they refuse to let you try it, take your business elesewhere to a shop that will let you. If you are nervous take someone with you to hold your hand during the process.

I have a Sony & a Tosh, both play anything.

Looking for my old AD

Pioneer for me.
565A in the UK, 563 in US. These will play everything, including DVD-A & SACD, multiregion, PAL/NTSC on both models, MP3, JPEG, CD, CD-R, CD-R/W, DVD-R, +R, -RW, +RW, there is nothing these won't play.

Also, some Sony machines have big trouble with home cooked discs that have a video bitrate that peaks over 8.2MB/Sec. They freeze.

As the last post said - take a stack of discs dow the store & test it.

Huh? Seems like almost all players I've seen say they playback -R's.

Yamakawa MultiRegion Progressive Scan DVD Player w/ Karaoke.

$59.99 at surpluscomputers if you are in San Jose, California.

http://www.softwareandstuff.com/CES10328.html

I've had it for a month now. So far I love it with zillion options you can set...especially you can brighten the output on those "dark" films (e.g. Predator) and it plays discs of all regions.

It even plays my coasters (burn failed discs). Amazing! They must've equipped it with multiple load/read methods...

1 shortcoming:
==============
The user manual is full of small screen shots. Font size is near to zero. Break out your reading glasses! You also have to be relatively knowledgable since it does not do explanation well or at all.

1 concern:
==========
The door violently pops open. No sure how long the mechanical arm will hold up.

I'd go with the Pioneer that wilkes mentioned. It's actually what I'm planning on getting in a couple of months. Not only does it play everything except dinner plates (and those may just not have been tested yet), but you can get it for $150. And, of course, it's a Pioneer which is probably as good a brand as you'll find.

Yep - definitely cannot fault the Pioneer.
It really does do everything. All 9 DVD-A groups (A lot of the universal players will only "see" group 1), all 3 SACD layers, MP3, CD, CD-R, CD-R/W, DVD-R, DVD-R/W, DVD+R, DVD+R/W, VCD, SVCD, JPG, PhotoCD, ETC, ETC.The only thing I have found that it does not much like is CD Text.
It also has Progressive outputs, Built in DTS-Stereo PCM, DD-Stereo PCM, 6 analogue outputs for SACD/DVD-A.

The DVD-V quality picture wise is just superb, and the DAC for DVD-A/SACD is 24/192 and sounds great.

BTW - there are still a lot of players here in the UK being sold that are less than happy about playing any form of home cooked DVD discs. When making your own you can greatly increase the compatibility problem by not encoding MPEG-2 at higher than 7MB/Sec. Also, go visit http://www.customflix.com/Customer/Compatibility.jsp
and
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php
to ensure that any player you are considering buying will play what you need.

LOL
