Hi,

First off apologies if i have posted this in the wrong thread.

I will be going travelling for a few months soon and i want to rip a load of DVD's (Mainly television box sets) i own onto my external hard drive which i will be taking with me so that i can watch them on the road. :)

I've looked around the internet to try and figure out the best way to do this, and tried a few different programmes (Handbrake, DVDShrink etc.) and they all seemed to take AGES to rip a dvd onto the hard drive.

I eventually stumbled across a programme called MagicDVDCopier (and also ripper) which ripped a DVD (GI Joe film) onto my hard drive in about 15 minutes - which amazed me! :D

So now i have a folder with the film split into 4 sections. My knowledge is very limited but they appear to be VOB files and they're named video_TS 01, Video_TS 02 etc. and in total they're about 4GB.

What i wanted to know is if there is any programme i can use to firstly join the files into 1 file, and then secondly shrink the size; or vice versa - I know i'm not asking too much! ;)

If anyone is able to help me it would be hugely appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Cheers

If space is a concern, does your software give you the option of ripping the Main Movie only - no extras, menus etc.
Perhaps it also lets you compress the files to fit a standard blank DVD (~4GB).

If it does neither, you can open the output folder in DVD Shrink and Reauthor to select the main movie and compress it.

If you join the VOB files to make one file, note that some external hard disks are formatted to FAT32 - which limits the size of any single file to 4GB maximum, to get around this you can format the drive to NTFS (if you check the drive Properties it will tell you how it's formatted).

If you leave the files as ifo, bup, vob a decent media player like VLC will have no problem playing them.

Vobmerge can join VOB files.
Vob2MPG can convert the vob files to a single mpeg file.

DVDFab HD Decrypter (which is free) can rip your protected disks.
You can use DVD Shrink to get them to the size you require.

Hi.You don't have to join the files together, that is what you get when you rip a DVD into a DVD.VOB format. When you burn them back to a blank disc they will be burned to it and the disc will play the entire movie.Without the .IFO and .BUP files the.VOB files would only play one at a time, there would be no smooth change from one vob to the next vob in sequence. You'd have to click one to play it and then click the next one,etc
If you want to burn the folder that the movie is in to disc then just choose the folder in your burning software click Burn and it create you a DVD of the DVD.
ImageBurn will burn folders or files as well as .ISO's and does a great job.
Software I use are ConvertXtoDVD4.1.2.336 and DVDFab Platinum 8.0.4.0, plus a couple of othersd...anyway, I digress
Whether it be the Full Disc movie or just the Main movie. ( Full disc copies the entire DVD, all of the trailers, extras, subtitles, copyright info and notes about PIRACY being illegal....Main Movie option leaves all the extras and trailers and copyright stuff out of the rip) It's not illegal to make a copy ..'a' being ONE..of any DVD. CD. Program, Operating system, vhs tape or whatever IF you own the original piece disc/tape. (Own???...bought t as in leased it for its life!!)here in New Zealand where I live. Also, I'd say check out the laws in the countries you plan to visit.......if customs decide to check your ex drive and find a pile of movies on it....well...it may be seen as Importing AND of Pirated swag...to Booty...ok
Question: how do you plan to play these movies on your ex drive? Presumably its a USB connection from your ex to your computer...or from your ex drive to a TV/DVD player whatever that has a USB input to allow you to watch the movies.
If yo want torip these movies to your ex-drive in the least space used then don't rip using the create DVD format (either DVD5 or DVD9), use .avi, divx, xvid or generic H.264 (MP4). You will get a single layer DVD (4.4 GB compressed to less than 1GB, sometimes 500-600 MB, sometimes not, maybe 1.? GB. But small in size.
And you will have just your one file then, it'll look like a little clip of film, like a single negative from a roll of film.
DVD Shrink v3.2 will rip the DVD's for you and will make them DVD5 (4.4GB close enough) It rips a dual layer 7+GB DVD in my computer in about 15 minutes but I have a 3.6GHz AMD quad core CPU and 8GB of DDR2 800MHz dual channel RAM. But Shrink is fast on slower computers.
If you have a heap of movies to rip then say ya gonna do 2-3 an hour. Whats the rush? Gangplank about to be raised??
Check out the settings etc in Shrink because if you make them as .ISO they won't play in a DVD player unless you burn them to disc or have a program called VLC on your computer. VLC will play just about anything/format whatever.
If you want to make the .avi or H.264 (MP4) or DivX/Xvid then you need a ripping software that will decode/encode to those formats for you.
Now what's a good ripper for making .avi of MP4 (H.264) or xvid/divx.....
Well!! I'll be blowed, a wee Google of Magic DVD Ripper/Copier informs me that you have just the ticket there to do it. Excellentte!!!
AVI and DivX and H.264 (MP4) produce superb results...brilliant in fact.....and ya don't want all that excess baggage of Trailers and FBI warnings and...and /...a waste of space.
Bon vivant and voyage
