Jodisoft, there are people here in the forum that get annoyed when new readers don't search before asking. At the top of this form there is SPLITTING DVD 9 to 2 DVD R's? click on the link -> http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/3004(closed). Plus this forum has a search fuinction that is extremely useful for reading older postings.
These have helped me in the past.

Jodisoft,I don't get annoyed. I'm not sitting at the computer I use to do this but I will help. What steps have you taken so far? When you're new to this it isn't easy but this is not rocket science. This is a great site.

Hi all,

Thanks for the reactions in this forum.
For some people I can understand it's time after time someone asks the same questions. I've tried to read some manuels on different sites, but i'm dutch so i had some problems doing the right thing here. Afterwards my friend and I manage to translate the rippingguide from doom9.net, thats because there are many pictures who show us how excactly we have to set the rippingprogramms.
We managed our first copy and we will thank you all for your help.

Hi all,

What guides/software/methods did you use to back up DVD9 to DVD+RW/+R? I've used this guide http://www.hkruse.dircon.co.uk/ to copy "Murder by Numbers" onto a DVD+RW using Phillips DVD+R/+RW CD-R/-RW combo burner. The software included DVD Decrypter, IfoEdit, Nero Burning ROM, ReMPEG2v1.5.2, and Notepad. The Media I used is Verbatim DataLivePlus DVD+RW 4.7GB. It only copies the movie with Digital 6channel, and the video. The video is not that great. The faces of people have the digital-blocks that blur faces.

How can I correct this? Are there any suggestions to burn a quality back-up that plays in settopplayer Songy DVP-S360?

Thanks,
Donald411

Hi Donald411,

I hope you can read my poor english because i an a dutchman.

I've tried several guides mentioned here and I only need 3 programms to copy a DVD to DVD+R/W.

The programms are:
DVD Decrypter (I have version 3.1.3)
IFOEDIT (I have version 0.94)
Nero (I have version 5.5.9.14)

All programms above you can download from several sites on the internet, just use GOOGLE to surch! Nero you can download from the Nerosite (testversion).

Some explaining to RIP and Adjust the movie. Hereby I must tell i just rip the movie, not the menus of it!!

DVD Decrypter: STEP-1
Place the DVD you want to copy into your DVD drive and start DVD-decrypter. From the MENU select MODE (FILE F). In the right Window you see several files selected (the movie). Click on one of the files and the hit (CTRL A) to select all. Normaly the programm sets the target directory to a drive with enough space on it with a name, don't alter it! (if you alter it make sure you make all you type UPPER CASE). Then hit the "button" DVD->Harddrive.
Depending of the speed of your DVD-drive it takes 20-40 minutes to rip the complete DVD to your harddrive. (end off STEP-1)

IFOEDIT: STEP-2
Look into the directory off your ripped movie, the is a bunch off very big files called: VTS_0x_1 (the x is the number off the most biggest files). Remember the name of the file!
Start IFOEDIT and select OPEN, go into the moviedirectory and there select the IFO-file that has the same name of your remembered file (example:VTS_01_0.IFO).
Now select the "VOB Extras" button and a popupwindow appears.

* Now depending on how big your movie is (1 or 2 DVD-R/W you have to make some choises!!

IF YOUR MOVIE WILL FITT ON 1 DVD YOU HAVE TO CHECK THE FOLLOWING:

STRIP STREAMS
CORRECT VOB UNIT
CORRECT ORIGINAL IFO FILES
CREATE NEW IFO FILES

Leave the VOB expert options on the right as they are!!

Select a destinationdirectory somewhere on your harddrive(s). The directory must be called VIDEO_TS (UPPER CASE!!).

Select OK and another pop-up-window appears called STRAEM LIST. Here you can select the languages and subtitles you want to have on your DVD. (I always select them all).
Then select STRIP IT and in about 10 minutes the movie will be copied to the new directory.

When copying is done close IFOEDIT and start it up again. Open in the "NEW" directory one of the IFO-files (doesn't matter witch one) and select the "button" GET VTS SECTORS. Aknowledge when been ask if you want them all changed. Hit OK 2 or 3 times and you will have a playing movie :)

You can try out your movie by pressing the button DVD PLAY.

Use Nero to burn your movie to DVD-disk.

IF YOUR MOVIE WONT FITT ON 1 DVD YOU HAVE TO SELECT THE FOLLOWING SETTINGS OF IFOEDIT:

STRIP STREAMS
CORRECT VOB UNITS
CORRECT IFO TABLES
SPLIT TO 2 DVD-R'S
CREATE SUBFOLDERS DISC1 AND DISK2

Do not selekt CREATE NEW IFO FILES!!! I tried it several times and keep having problems playing my movies. This will be another step after we been done the step above!!

Hit OK and a popup window appears called STREAM LIST. Somewhere in the middle there is a highlighted files, leave it alone, the programm itselfs looks for the best way to split your movie in 2 parts, just hit the button SPLIT IT.
A second pop-up-window appears called STREAM LIST, where you can select the languages of you movie you wanna have. As said before i always take them all! Then hit the button STRIP IT and the movie will be copied to your harddrive in two directories.

After this is finished close IFOEDIT and open it again. Go into the first directory and select the VTS_0x_01.ifo
Again use the button VOB EXTRAS and now with the following selection:
CREATE NEW IFO FILES
CORRECT ORIGINAL IFO FILES (will go on automaticly!)

Now hit OK and the files will be read once again and the IFO-files on disk will be corrected and/or created.

If your done with the first directory, do the same with the second directory, dont forget it.

BE AWARE!!! IF you do this for the second directory make sure you change the DESTINATION DIERECTORY to the "disk2 directory", otherwise it will be written to the wrong directory!!!

If you done this close IFOEDIT again and open it again. Go into the disc-1/video_ts directory and open any of the IFO-files. Hit button "GET VTS SECTORS" and acknowledge if ask to do this for all files. Hit OK 2 or 3 times and the movie is finished to be written to a DVD.
Do the same for the disk-2/video_ts directory and the second disk is finished to be written to DVD.

Like in explaining for 1-DVD you can try out your movie by hitting DVD-PLAY.

I Hope i dont have to explain how you must write with NERO (settings) IF you dont know, send me a mail to Jodisoft@brunssum.net and i mail you back.

Hopefully this will take all your troubles away to write a DVD.

Regards,
Jodie

For Donald411,

I've read the part you linked to this page and now i see you want to write a DVD-9 to a DVD+R.
Now i understand that you have problems with some blocks in faces and other things.
For copying a DVD-9 to a DVD-5 you have to lower the bitrate as well you have "to cropp" the video. This will lower the quality of your movie and it shows when playing it.
I you dont want to spend some money on a DVD+R/W or DVD-R/W, you have to live with this kind of problems, you cant correct it.

Before it putt some DVD's onto VCD and SVCD.
With VCD you lose a lot of quality and sometimes have some blocks to in the movie. With SVCD the quality is better and more important the bitrate is much higher and thats why i never had problems with blocks in it.
Biterate is all, but you can't keep lower them, there is a limit to it. If you go beneath this limit you will get a terrible result. Thats why you have blocks.

I dont know whats the lower limit of the biterate. One thing i know if that action movies need a higher biterate then normal movies. The higher the action the higher the bitrate. There are some sites linked to doom9net and VCDhelp who explain this part of copying.

Regards,
Jodie
