I have an older half brother who claims he can tell the difference between divx and dvd movies by looking at the screen during a movie.Wanted to know if there is a way to make an avi(divx) from a dvd without losing any quality just to teach him a lesson. As long as the avi is not larger than the original dvd file size shouldnt matter.
custom built gaming pc from early 2010,ps2 with 15 games all original,ps3 500gbs with 5 games all original, yamaha amp and 5.1channel surround sound speakers,46inch sony lcd smart tv.

it has to be the same bitrate to be the same size (size = running time x bitrate).
In the example below, a two hour DVD that I know is 7GB (7000 MB) shows a bitrate of 7729Kb/sec.
If I load the DVD title into VirtualDub and set the codec for 7729kb/s I should get a 7GB AVI file (the size stipulated).
You have to look at the output and decide if it's decent quality.
As a side note, I think a bit rate of 10000kb/s is the maximum that a standalone player can read, so increasing the size much beyond 7GB (by upping the bitrate hoping for more quality) may not work - also there may be the problem of the 2GB limit for AVI files that is kicked around from time to time.
If you want to make a good copy that is only 700mb, convert it to H264/X264 format using AutoMKV(free). If you have Nero, use Nero recode to encode it. H264/X264 format is capable of producing higher quality encoding.
Rip to mpeg2 .. no conversion at all .. output file should be identical to the disk source. The minute you start mucking about changing the video source format you lose quality and those in the know who know what to look for will be able to tell
It's impossible to rip a dvd without losing quality!
Have you read the tips: "Is it Possible to Convert Video Without Losing Quality?"
I thiNK you can search it on google or what...
