Im not in this for competition or any other crap like that. i just want a card that runs smothly, nice graphics and overall, exelliant. My Dads old 128MB GeForce 4 Ti4200 beat my 256MB GeForce FX5600XT. Can you explain that?

A video card doesnt mean much without the rest of the computer -- a more highly tuned system can easily overcome the superior graphics card.

1. Benchmarks are seriously overrated lol
2. By "same system" do you mean, "clean format and retweak, customizing for the new graphics card" or "swap the video card and reboot". Big difference.

i sawpped the video card around. even without benchmarking the cards you can still see a big differance.

Well there you have it! :) Tweaked settings for specific vid cards will definitely give one card an edge over another. Either that or you didnt setup the second video card after you installed it. With major subsystem components like vid cards, you're prolly best off doing an absolute clean uninstall, reinstall and tweak (ideally a reformat, but for some people that's a lot to ask-for for just a vidcard change).

If you used a DX9 game for the comparison, that may explain it. The Ti4200 doesn't support DX9 so it would've run the game in DX8 whereas the 5600 supports DX9 but was a dog at it so the 4200 would've had a much easier time of it running the game in the less demanding DX8.

I have also heard that the FX5600XT supports DX9, but infact it actually runs at DX8.1 and the radeon do work fully at DX9

Need some advice and pointed in the right direction as far to what video card to purchase. I have an HP computer that I bought new in Feb, 2003. I have 384MB DDR 2100 Memory and obviously no video card, just the intergrated crap it came with. I do have an AGP slot. I play the game Diablo 2 with this machine and it doesn't do to bad, every once in awhile the game might freeze for a brief moment and then it clears up, not really a big deal, doesn't do it all the time. I know I need a video card though for future games and just performace value. I don't know much about video cards, I just know I want to find something $99 or less with 128mb or maybe more? Could someone recommend a decent card? I have checked out many on TigerDirect.com I have seen alot of choices, Chain Tech Gforce Cards, ATI Saffire cards. What would be a good choice for a cheap card? like I said I want to spend $99 or less. I'm not looking for top of the line, or something to brag about to my friends, just something to play newer games smoothly and something that kics the @ss of my intergrated video. Bassically I need something that is good enough and affordable. I heard rumors from People over the last couple years that Nivida make the best cheap(affordable card) and ATI make the better top of the line(expensive)card. I don't know how much truth is in that. Could you guys just name some video cards that would be good for what I need in my price range?

ATI have the best reviews, Radeon Rule and the GFX series has been nick named the 'flop'. Check out Ebuyer.com for good prices on video cards.
The ATI 9600SE looks ok, the US side of Ebuyer looks really crap

So go with the ATI 9600SE card? Is their any Nivida cards comparable to that card for around the same price? You are right that is a good price for that card, I saw a ATI 9200 card at Circuit City for $99 which the 9600 card is only a little more and the model number is a few numbers higher.

Looks like Ebuyer might be the way to go. I liked Tiger direct, but that got all these bullcrap rebates and 100 different versions of the same card and the prices are all over the place. It's easy for a newbie to get confused.

Hi JSRife,
I would avoid the 9600SE especially with a budget of $100. It's the lowest performing model of the 9600 family. It's a castrated version that's not worth the money in my opnion.
You can get a plain-jane 9600 for $100 or if you can scrape up another $20 or so you can get a 9600Pro which is an outstanding little card for the money.
This is one of the absolute best sites to buy from:

Nephilim,
You are right! I know the ATI Pro chips are very good, People are always talking about them. That is a very good price $123.99 I think it would be worth spending the extra money on it. I knew the ATI Pro chips were great, just didn't know you could pick one up that cheap, and you're right you can , saw it right on the website. If and when they ever make the game Diablo 3, I would be good to go with that 9600 Pro, no doubt about it. I am hoping they do put D3 out, I'm addicted to the Diablo series. And a good video card will make D2 run great too. I also want a video card to use it's own memory instead of using my DDR memory for anything that takes video memory, which is about everything. I think i'm done looking for cards. The 9600 Pro all the way. Thanks for the tip.

Diablo2 uses ... 2D sprite graphics which were circa 1994? It shouldnt be hard to run even with some corny 2D onboard chip ;-)

i only suggested the 9600SE because it was closest to $99, but Nephilim is right the 9600SE is shit, go with the 9600/9600 Pro. if you save up $165 you could get a 9600XT and there supposed to be brilliant.

Asus GeForce FX5700 (256MB) $235.CDN
Sapphire Radeon 9600XT (256MB) $240.CDN
Ford & Chevy
Note: you better get a video board that's both 4x/8x compatible for sure, or if your MoBo supports 2x/4x you're OK; make sure your AGP slot is 4x at least because if only 2x then your choices will be few, and growing fewer...

I don't have no clue if my system runs 2x, 4x or 8x video card support AGP slot. I just assumed you could throw in any video card just about with any newer computer with an AGP slot. I don't really know how to find out what my Motherboard supports. I know my Motherboard can handle 2 512mb DDR 2100 memory chips which is a gig, I don't know if that means anything towards the AGP slot. I'm not an expert, but my System should be able to handle at least a 4x Video card. A friend of mine has an HP computer 2 years older than mine, he bought his in 2001, and he added a 128mb video card to his system with no problems, like I said probably doesn't mean anything. I just know if my system can handle it, I'm getting the ATI 9600 pro for $123.99

otester I don't know whether you're asking or telling! LoL ;-) but you seem to have a good grasp of the situation. Like we said, ATI has excellent hardware but maybe not so good software compared to NVidia.

A 2002 motherboard running PC2100 DDR, probably supports AGP 4x so the 9600Pro would be a fine choice for you. AGP slots have three or four generations now, running lower voltages each time, and someone with an older mobo (I just worked on a PII-333 with AGP 1x!) would be surprised and unhappy to find no support for the latest AGP 8x vid card. Most cards are 8x/4x today, but the 4x support is going to disappear the way 2x support already has (remember 3dfx Voodoo3 etc?)
You will be much pleased with the ATI vs. your onboard graphics...
Cheers
