Well if you look at things literally - every single analogy in the world is "bad".

About par although I would imagine the NV35 has a bit more headroom since its running on a smaller process :)

LOL play nice :P Of course JSrife, you gotta slow down a bit heehee (i.e., you prolly have 7 different topics in the last 10 posts here or something like that -- dont get picky with me im just conveying an idea haha) ... let's spend some time on a topic or two and develop it :)

Very true but let's try to keep them in Safety Valve okay? I have a hard enough time keeping this area "clean" and "pretty" :)

But then again, the word useless is only an opinion in itself...I find threads that have alot of post in them are obviously good for something, or People wouldn't write in them :) If you really think about it, for exaple the Nvidia vs Ati post is very popular in here, yet it doesn't really prove anything, it's just a bunch of People arguing about Nvidia vs Ati...Back to the ol Chevy vs Ford debate, lol....To each his own.

Yes indeed but it takes away from the depth of the thread when every other post is either (a) a snippet comment (b) a reply to a snippet comment or (c) and offtopic post or (d) a reply to an offtopic post or (e) Having to re-explain something over again. This is a good thread indeed, but let's try to keep some degree of substance and depth and contribute to the thread :)

I can't believe the rate at which they're developing the newer generations of graphics processors!
Here is a quote from a review of the new FarCry v1.2 patch (which adds new support for DirectX9.0c / Shader Model 3.0):
"Gamers should have a GeForce FX 5900/5950 or an ATi Radeon 9800 in their system. However, even with such hardware under the hood, expect 1024x768 to be the ceiling. The ideal hardware for this game would be graphics accelerators of the newest generation, such as the GeForce 6800 series or ATi's X800 family."
Their testing
http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20040705/index.html
shows that, while Radeon 9800XT is still hangin' in there, the GeForce FX5950 Ultra is already past its prime.
Granted this is the latest bleeding-edge tech demo game, but my suppliers also have this to say:
"GeForce FX5950 Ultra $544.99 Soon to be Discontinued"
Makes you want to run right over there with your six hundred (Canadian) bucks, does it not?
Yeesh.

Yep! I think we are beginning to see a trend in games themselves rather than hardware: it used to be that the gaming hardware determined how well we could play a game but recently its become more of a, "if you want to play this game you need a certain hardware platform" ... like i mean games have always had hardware requirements but they've never been seriously enforced :)

The ATI X800 and nVidia 6800 are a phenomenal leap in performance. We haven't seen this big a leap in years.

For the longest time when a new gen card came out that gave us a 20 or 30 percent increase it was great but everything I've read on these two bad boys indicates almost double the performance!

Love them or hate them ATI and nVidia's fierce competition means nothing but great things for us.

Makes me wonder this...They start working on these games before the X800 or 6800 even come out, are they just expecting a newer video card to fill the bill, makes me wonder how they test these games so far in advance when they maybe are working with less than the current card. Again these game makers probably have things we cannot have.

The game develpers work very closely with the card developers :)

I think the radeon would, but it depends on what card, XFX, Gainward, ASUS or MSI (NVIDIA) or Sapphire, Hightech or Hercules (ATI) and it also depends on the clock speeds and amount of memory

Well obviously however the 5900 has the advantage of making use of GDDR memory (on select boards) for a much higher memory bandwidth -- the 9800Pro doesnt have models using that memory .. the 9800XT however, that's a different story. Naturally we wouldnt be comparing a 128MB ATi card next to a 256MB nVidia card or vice versa -- that simply wouldnt make sense in a practical case. I'm not sure on the OC overhead for the 9800Pro (Nephilim?) but I'm aware that the 5900 (and the 5950 which can be a low as $20 more) has some OC headroom (partially thanks to the smaller design process)

I'm not much for OC'ing myself (I've burned up enough stuff at my job as an electrician to know what'll happen if I try it) but if you want to know what a Radeon can do try here:

Hehe I know that feeling all to well.... burned out ram, video chips, mobos and cpus heehee. In general however I would suspect that the Radeon's OC ceiling to be fairly low ... otherwise they would have clocked their chips much more aggressively

In case you didnt know, "Radeon" is a product line made by a Canadian Company called ATi. Discussion about the versitility of such products and OC potential for such products is well within topic parameters.

What you should be concerned with is ALLCAPSING.

The debate between the ATI X800 VS Nvidia 6800 is simple. Both cards are bassically the same experience they both are within there generation, any game the x800 can play beautifully so can the 6800 and vise versa. If I was a Video card geeker, I would have to go with the X800 just for the simple fact it might be a few bucks cheaper and it looks alot cooler inside your case with the clear side to drool over. To me the quality built overall has to go to the Nvidia, the Nvidia looks like it might user little higher grade componets and the cards look as though it may cost a little more money to make, is probably why the price is a little higher over the X800.
