Hi,

I was wondering if anybody has been able to overcome the following problem.
I have successfully backed up hundreds of DVDs previously and have had no major problems with any of them(Nothing that couldn't be overcome by using different tools anyway). I recently purchased the Silver-Vision Wrestlemania 1, 2, 3, and 4 DVDs and tried to back them up. First of all DVD43 will stay on the little devil face for good until you eject the disk. After ejecting, every disk that I try to play on my PC was jumpy and backing up with DVDShrink took twice as long as normal. I found out that all of a sudden my secondary IDE channel had been altered from DMA to PIO. I reset the channel back to DMA and playback etc. was fine again. I tried the Wrestling DVDs again and the same thing happened. After resetting my secondary channel back to DMA again I decided to disable DVD43 and put it through DVDShrink. After 3 seconds Shrink freezes until the disk is removed. My next resort was to try to decrypt using DVD Decrypter. Guess what?.....Oh yeah, that froze after a couple of seconds too! I have also tried DVD X Copy Xpress and Smartripper including the old trick of playing the dvd first for a while and then ripping it. This one, I'm soory to say, has beaten me for the moment.
What scares me is, that if there is no way around it, what happens if the film studios decide to use the same encryption method as Silver-Vision?

Has anybody got any suggestions?

Thanks very much.

If you have a copy of DVD-X Rescue, see if that program can "read" the disks. If it will, the backup (although not by the book) is fairly simple. I have had a few that nothing BUT X-Rescue could read from begining to end.

Let me know if X-Rescue can "Analyze" and read the disks, and I will then walk you through the backup procedures.

I stopped counting when I reached 60!

If the DMA is altering back to PIO, then this normally indicates that it is having trouble reading the media.

DMA is faster than PIO, so if the media is scratched or dirty then it may encounter read errors, so the OS automatically changes it to PIO (slower read rate)to compensate, if it still encounters problems, you may have hardware failure - dirty optic within the reader or dirty/scratched disc.............

Some times the OS locks it into PIO mode (my XP does), and you have to uninstall the IDE controller, power down, power up again and it reinstalls it.
This happens to me when ever I have a diry/unreadable disc..............

I don't think it would be down to any type of encryption, either dirty/scratched disc or dirty optic.........

...............PIO is no go, DMA all the way...............

The DVDs are 4 brand new disks straight out of the shrink wrap and and are completely unmarked so it is not the disks. There is also nothing wrong with the lense as I can still backup and play everything else with no problems whatsoever. Believe me it has to be the way that the DVDs are encrypted/encoded. Please....I am no idiot so no more suggestions about cleaning the disks or the laser.
Thanks to the guy who recommended DVD X Rescue. I will try to find a free copy of it and see how it goes.

Never heard of a new type of encryption like this.....

If I come up with any 'none idiot comment' I shall post...........

But still, the way the world is revolving, who knows....good luck...........
