What was the original clock speed of the processor? Because if it was a the original P3-450 which was the very first P3 to hit the market, while it did have headroom, the PCI speeds were pretty senstive :)

Does WXP crash when you run it at 450?

Sorry I dont know why I asked that question especially since you I already knew the answer ... I guess I meant to ask if W98 also crashed .... but in either case, what is the speed of the memory sticks? (PC66 or PC100 or something else)

Yikes! the problems that appear, unlooked-for...
So, what is XP's problem? Is it an NT kernel thing, where 98 was undemanding of tolerances in comparison?
My gut says 'hardware compatibility list'. We all forget that when Win2K first appeared there was all kinds of chaos with previously fine hardware. I remember a nice Athlon550 / Asus rig that bluescreened every time, to this day it still runs Win98.
(I have since learned that early ACPI mobo were not W2K compatible until ACPI disabled in BIOS)
If anything can save you it might be in your BIOS; check for latest BIOS, maybe microcode updates and issues have been addressed.
Make sure PnP/OS is OFF
BIOS and Video shadow are OFF
Memory settings conservative or SPD
Update BIOS and load compatibility or fail-safe settings (just to try to get it to 450mHz)
Praetor should he goose his voltages? Maybe lotta hours on the 450 & it's growing cranky...
On SPD maybe memory is timing different at 100 than 66, maybe processor not problem?
sirB we wanna hear that you got 133 FSB going! It's a shame, you should not be strugglin' like this just for 100 FSB
Best of luck, let us know

Well with WXP why would this be the case?

I never particularly suspected the proc as being the problem but perhaps the memory isnt downclockable? (i know it sounds wierd but ive had a system -- hehe my XP2100 which when I downclocked to 1400Mhz, the memory would crap out on me from time to time ... weird but hey its a computer).

Would you mind downloading a program, CPUz ( http://www.cpuid.com ) and spec'ing out the processor, RAM and mobo? :)

Actually I was kinda hoping I could get the following:

CPU
Codename
Voltage
Core Speed
Multiplier
FSB

MAINBOARD
Manufacturer
Model

MEMORY
Modules Information
Frequency
FSB:DRAM

Cheers.

Damn! You ever try bringing those RAM timings down?

Ok as for some background/filler information, here's the low-down on the Katmai450s:
CPU Clock Speed: 450Mhz
FSB SPeed: 100Mhz
Multiplier: 4.5x
Core Voltage: 2.0V
Process: 0.25 micron
Which is pretty much what you've told us so the chip does seem to be correctly acertained.

The reason I asked about the memory speed was because if the memory was PC66 and the FSB:DRAM ratio is 1:1 as I suspected then by running the CPU at 450Mhz (which meant running the FSB at 100) would causae the memory to be OCd by a factor of 50% -- quite a but for them older modules. Your modules are rated upt o PC125 however so I dont suspect that the memory is what is causing the voltage.

Some suggestions
- You might consider upping the voltage to 2.05 or 2.10 and see if WXP will function then
- Check to see that the memory timings are determined by SPD
- If you feel like it, reset the bios to default configurations to defaults or fail-safes and install WXP

I didnt mean OC ... but PC3200 running 2.5-4-4-6 ... sure its good but on an Intel platform you should be able to notch that down a bit without even classifiying it as "overclocking" (there should be a setting in the BIOS for "performance timings" instead of "optimal"

Is it possible something is messed up with the installation of WXP? Since we are trying to deal with a hardware issue here it might be wise to eliminate the possibilities of software conflicts by dealing with a fresh installtion of WXP

By fresh installation I was thinking of JUST WXP ... no antivirus, no nothing. Fire up the clean WXP, start with the drivers then the diagnostic utils and then when you are certain stuff works.... then install the host of software
