Burner: Iomega External super DVD 4x USB
Hotburn: 2.4.6 (build 81) - latest from Iomega website
Media: Memorex -RW 4X
CompUSA -R 2X
OS: XP
USB: 2.0 NEC

I used Iomega Hotburn that came with Iomega Super DVD USB 4x burner. Initially, it successfully created most of my movie backups. (I contributed those failures to low grade media....as I was "told".)

However, after read thru form postings, I downloaded Nero demo. Burned a few backups OK, though there are 2 incidences of system dumps /reboot when I pressed a key AFTER reading the successful burn message.

My Nero demo is expired last Thursday (by number of usage and not by date as I thought.) So I went back to HotBurn and successfully burned 4 backup DVDs in a row on Memorex 4X -RW and CompUSA 2X -R media.

With absolutely nothing changed. Poof!

Starting the 5th burn that night (until now )the burn process will Always failed, mostly during the "closing the disc" phase with the error message -
"Error writing the disc"
"I/O error (2a/02/04/04)- Logical unit not ready, format in progress
"Error-operation was not successful"

I followed Iomega support's input and downloaded new Hotburn patch, updated (NEC) USB driver, using onlyt 1 USB during burning.

And get new message.
"Error closing the disc or session"
"I/O error (51/06/29/00) - Poiwer on, reset or bus device...
"Error-operation was not succesful"

So Iomega support's said to uninstall ALL burning softwares since they somehow can interfere HotBurn.

Nero demo was uninstalled long before my recent trials, the only other burning sw is Roxio Easy CD creater which came with the system and never seems to interfere with HotBurn before.

I can uninstall Roxio too. I am so frustrated in making coasters especially after successfully created 100+ backup copies.

Your input and advices are greatly appreicated.!

Thanks.

P.S. 2 more info to share or ask question

1) Hotburn does not always regonize my external Iomega burner. Sometimes, it would not even regonize internal Toshiba drive.

From time to time, I need to restart the sw a few times in combination of opening/closing the burner with/without disc. Or, I will go back to ms to "add a hardware" (which alwasy regonize the external drive) to "wake up" Hotbur sw.

2) While fiddling, I think I discovered the cheap CompUSA -R 2x discs have less than 4.38 storage. The Hotburn software will put out a warning saying the files will not fit onto the disc vs. no warning when I used Memorex -RW media.

If making successful backups are your only concern, try DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter both are free.

Thanks. I do use DVD Shrink. But I need a burner sw.

I also downloaded DVD Decrypter but I don't see any burning capabilities.

I think there is something needs to be fixed but not sure what. I went back to DVDXcopy after uninstall all other burning sw. Ripp went OK as DVD Shrink does. But the burning would fail with

"Fatal SCSI error. Lower bytes of 'SCSIError' give driver error code."

BTW, I stopped by the store, attached the burner to a compaq, and used Sonic 7.0 (?) to successfully burn a ~350mb file. Of course, all my burn failed at around 3.2 gb when the burner is attached to my own PC.

What is going on? Is the problem on my PC or burner? I am getting confused.

Any help would be appreciated.

well hopefully you have NTFS and not FAT32. Decrypter does burn, but only ISO's.

1)Open Shrink, open disc
2)Click "backup!"
3)Change target destination to "ISO Image File", and check box to Launch DVD Decrypter
4)Click Ok.

You may want to post your system specs as well. Such as processor speed, type of memory and amount of ram, size of hard drive, and amount of available space..etc.
I only say this because I once owned an Iomega CD burner, that came with Hotburn software. If I had to pick the ultimate POS software I have ever used, THAT would be IT!! I have never had so many problems with a software package before or since.
I think the standard most use is Nero 6.0, I tried Roxio before, as it came with one of my burners, but I was not very happy with it. But many use it and love it. I do think Nero is well worth the money myself, and it is very reliable as well.
I remember back a year or so ago, I read a piece on how Roxio leaves a string in your Registry, that will screw with OTHER burning software, even after you uninstall it. As picky as Hotburn is, I would google and see if I could find an article on it first off. I don?t remember which string it was anymore..it has been so long now. But I do know it HELPED me a lot when I yanked it out. I still keep Hotburn on a box I don?t use very often, because I also found out later on, that many .mov files I burned would ONLY PLAY on that software too.<LAUGH> (And I could not even open them without Hotburn, to COPY them with another program once they had been burned with Hotburn software!!<LAUGH>) I have never seen anything like Hotburn!!
You may want to try Ritek G04 disks as well. It is what most listers here use for good burns, or so it seems anyway. You can pick them up at newegg.com for about $35 for 50 of them, shipping included. I have never burned a coaster with them anyway.
Good luck to you.

flip218 and Shooterč,

Thx for the input.

I removed any references of Roxio, AHEAD (Nero) and Hotburn in my registry. I installed DVD Decrypter.

I try out a small movie clip of 35310 kb (34.4 mb) and DVD Decrypter burned successfully on my Memrex +RW 4X.

Tried to burn a regular feature film of 4,455,402 KB(42.4 MB), it failed at sector 10 on 2 different disk.

I/O Error!

"

I read other thread on this semaphore and made sure all my IDE devices have "DMA if avaialble" for Transfer Mode. I also re-backup the file with higher compression in DVD Shrink to cut down the size of the ISO output file (since the sample clip burnt OK perviously and it might be the media lies about the actual storage size - thought DVD Decrypter reports the disc has 4.7 gb or 4.3 usable.)

However, 2 more failures with the same error! I can hear the Iomega external drive start cranking when it cannot continue the write.

From semaphore threads, they also mentioned blank media too. I can relate to that. But I used the same media for 50+ successful burns. And even the lastest, I can burn samller file.

Is it my burner physical problem? Iomega says I can submit a request for replacement since I only got this unit for 1.5 months.

What should I do? I am still confused on what components went wrong. my PC, burner, fm, sw, media?

Cry, cry,.... I was able to backup 100+ discs successfully before all hells break loose.

Please help?!

Here are the lines from 3 different burns. The rest of the error message are exactly the same.

If Iomega is offering to swap the burner for you, I would take the offer myself. Then at least you will KNOW if that IS the problem or not.
If the new one still does the same thing, and you have enough hard drive space, and enough RAM to do the job, and all your downloads of Shrink, and Decryptor are new, and up to date..then the problem would have to lay someplace else.
I burned over 300 disks with my Pioneer 105A burner, then all of a sudden it would not burn at 4X anymore..it will only burn at 2X. Didn?t seem to be any reason for it, nothing changed..I tried all the same fixes you did..with the same results.
I just put in a new 107 last night, and I am burning 4X GO4 disks, at 8X now (with a firmware flash.) So the problem COULD be with the burner. The only way to really tell for sure, is to change it, and find out. (Unless you have another computer you can try it in first anyway.) At least this way it wont cost you anything to do so. Right? <smile>
Good luck to you.

I JUST saw where you posted the free space of your hard drive at the bottom of the list, (sorry I missed it before.) With only 8 gigs of free space on your hard drive, that MAY be the main reason for the failures. I know many people run into problems with less than 10 gigs of free space on their hard drive.
You have to remember with XP, that the ?auto restore function? will make a duplicate of everything you put on your hard drive. So if you copy off a 4.5 gig movie, you are really adding 9 gigs of information to the drive windows in installed on..See? So that COULD be the problem your burner has. If possible, I would TRY to free up at least 15 gigs of space on ONE drive, and run the whole process from that ONE drive. It may not help, but it MAY be what the problem is. Worth a shot anyway. :)
Good luck,

To conclude this thread. I found out what happened that prevented me from successful burn after I made 100 DVDs.

Somehow, I left a "foam ring" when I inserted the media (1st disc from the spindle.) Stupid Stupid me! Huhn!

The ring must got stuck at an unique place inside the burner that I was still able to use DVD Decrypter, DVDXCpopy, and Hotburn and burn up to ~4 GB before DVD laser beam hit that area.

Thanks to all of you who helped. And a special thank to a friend of mine who shook the burner, and by accident, loosened up the "foam ring".

So a word of caution to you to watch out for that ring before you insert the media.

Q: Is there a formal name for that thing?

Thanks again to you all.
