Hi, what a great website! I have spent days reading and have decided on the Pioneer DVR 107. This is all new to me, never owned one, and want to know what I need to install this hardware. From what I see you only get a naked box! Do I need any installation software, any cables or anything like that? Many thanks for your help so far, I can't wait to get this thing!

If you are going to hook it up to your secondary IDE cable with your CD Rom/CD-RW the DVD works best as the Master jumper setting, and change the CD Rom/CD-RW to slave.
You should not have to install any software to make the drive work. Every thing you need to know about the drive, drivers, firmware and documentation can be found at the site: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/article/0,,2076_4249_39099161,00.html

I'd personally recommend staying as far away from DVD Xcopy and Roxio as you can. Both are subpar performers and not worth the money.
You can start off copying DVDs for the low low price of nothing. DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter are both free and two of the best apps to be had. Shrink will rip/compress the film and then use Decrypter to burn. Both can be downloaded from our Software section and guides are available in our Guides section.
Later on if you want to spend a little $$ on some good software, Nero 6 Ultra gets my highest recommendation :)
Since you're just starting out, I'd suggest getting a couple RW (rewritable) discs until you get the hang of it so you don't start a collection of coasters if things don't go well at first.

Thanks so much for all your fast input! I was going to purchase DVD Xcopy Plat. then found your site, and have already downloaded the DVD Shrink and Decrypter. I look forward to using it! A lot of the technical info is above my head at this point, so once I have all the stuff I need to get started, it should all fall into place! I will do some trial runs on RW disks and let you know how I go! Thank you! I'm still not too sure what the basics are that I need to install this drive, it seems to come with nothing other that the DVD burner! I have a CD burner in my tower, do I remove that and replace with DVD burner, or can I just add DVD burner? I have an extra slot.

If you have an empty drive bay then you can just add it to your computer, without taking out the CD burner. However, as desertrat said, it is best to set the jumpers on the DVD-RW to master, and the cd burner's to Slave if you do leave the CD burner in your compuer.
This is not hard to do, just a matter of making one small change on the back of the burner. Just changing a little jumper. If you have a problem with it, just check back here for more help.

hi, i also got the Pioneer DVR 107. Everything was going fine. My system read the drive. I have Win XP, and the "hardware detected" bubble came up, indicating that everything was going ok. The new drive always appears in my computer. The computer completely recognizes the drive. Although there is one major problem. My drive doesn't read any form of DVD, CD, original or burned. I don't understand what the problem is. All of the connections are fine, and the computer reads the drive. When I insert and form of disc, the busy light goes on, but thats it. And when I go into my computer, it indicates that there is no disc in the drive. I'm really puzzled...Can anyone please help????

Do you have all of the updates from MS installed for XP? If so, then next I would try going into the device manager, and uninstalling the drive, and then rebooting, and let windows detect it a second time. Sometimes that is all it takes.
You will also want to flash the firmware on that drive as well. Most of the 107?s (from what I hear anyway,) were shipped with out of date firmware in them, causing some problems. But once the new firmware is flashed, everyone has been happy with them.
If that does not do it, then I would RMA it back to the company you bought it from for a new drive.

im getting, when i hit record...
dvd-rw error
the drive reported a error:
SENSE KEY = Illigal request
SENSE CODE = 0 x 24
INVALID FIELD IN CDB.
can you help
im using a mac g4 .
