Hi,
first off, I'm new to the PS3 scene, I haven't even bought the console yet, but I would like to ask some advanced questions.
Basically, the reason I don't have a PS3 yet, is because I like to play around with systems I buy, and so far I didn't see enough potential in this. I'm not a pirate, I buy games, I rent games, I trade games. But I don't like just having a black box standing there. I like the idea of the FTP server. I like playing with emulators (specifically looking for a better PSX emulator since my PSOne died lately). Plus with 2 (soon 3) systems with plenty of disks I hate looking for the right disk, cleaning them all up all the time so the kids don't scratch them etc. Basically I play more Wii than XBox almost only because of the Backup Manager. So it seems I can get all that for the PS3 now, so here I am.
I did some research and here is what I understand, stop me when I misunderstand something:
There seem to be two types of jailbreaks:
1) +- permanent ones that flash the firmware, after which you can install homebrew directly from a USB
2) ones that you do at every start up using a dongle
Is my understanding correct? Is one preferable to the other? I am not an online games and pretty much don't care about PSN. I might not even hook the thing up to the net? Does that change anything in my choice. It seems to me that flashing the firmware saves time at every startup and money by not buying the dongle. I assume there is a bigger risk of bricking though.
Thoughts?
Then the firmware question.
I seem to have found plenty of tutorials for 3.55 but nothing for 3.56. Is that correct? What firmware are new PS3s generally on? Would it be more prudent to buy a used one? Can 3.56 be downgraded?
Next the model number?
I think I saw some older models have bricking problems with 3.55. I guess this is only important if I buy a used one. Are there certain model numbers to avoid? Does it not matter if the firmware is older (3.41)?
Then the external HDD.
That's how I like to play my games. Portable to take to a friend. No disk changing etc. So what do I need here? I saw FAT32? Anything else to make it work (other than the actual jailbreak and Backup Manager)? install/declare the HDD? anything?
I guess that's it. I assume installing emulators is just a question of running install packages?
Well, I would appreciate some clarifications very much. Maybe a good tip on where to look for a used system.
Thanks in advance

I recommend using 3.55 Kmeaw firmware, with multiman 1.15.04 to backup and run your games. New PS3s tend to come with 3.42-3.50. The only way to downgrade a 3.56 is to use a Nor/Nand Flasher which is way too complicated and risky for the average joe and there is no custom/manufacture 3.56 firmware. As far as older models bricking, thats only if you use Waninkos 3.55 V1. The firmware on the PS3 just needs to be 3.55 or below. On external hd certain games won't run, freeze, glitch, or will not be able to copy unless you split them. Fat32 cannot handle individual files bigger than 4gb. Don't get confused, you can transfer a game bigger than 4gb to your harddrive and it still might run. For example Black Ops is around 19gbs, and you can back it up to your external and run it, however Gran Turismo 5 is around 20gb, so it will not transfer to your external unless you split it, multiman does it automatically, because one of its files is bigger than 4gb.

Thanks,
that's actually very helpful. Things are a lot clearer in my mind. So any new or GameStop preowned PS3 should really do the job?
So i can do the Kmeaw firmware update myself? (I do have some understanding of modding from the Wii so I'm not helpless). So after the firmware is updated, can I just start the PS3 normally every time or does it require something special at every startup (I saw some things like that in some videos)?
So the one thing that I'm not 100% clear on is the HD thing. With the Wii, I use the backup Manager to copy the games from my original disks to the HD, and can then play them without the disk in so I can bring them to safety. Is that how it works for the PS3? Obviously, the PS3 actually has an internal HD as well. So can I chose which one to use? You said some games don't work from external HD... DO they work from the internal one? I guess it would be no problem keeping the games that have problems internally and the other ones externally. Am I missing something? Basically, what's important for me is to make sure is that I don't have to swap disks when I want a different games (and mostly, that my kids don't have to touch disks when they play since I have lost good games that way).
Please let me know if I am missing something. I want to go ahead and buy everything I need in the coming weeks. Is there a restriction to the HD models that work with the PS3? Anything else I should be thinking of?
Thanks again

Just had a friend buy a new ps3 from gamestop and it came with 3.42. You can do the Kmeaw update yourself, you either build the firmware on a pc or can just download a pre made one which comes with everything your going to need. You want to check the files md5 to make sure it matches, if not your going to brick your ps3 or it won't even run. You don't need to do anything special just turn on and play.
On the Ps3 you can back up your games on your external or internal, just keep in mind you will need to have a game in your ps3 bluray drive, doesn't matter which. All the games I backed up work flawless from my internal. If you want to know which games to and don't work on external/internal check HERE.
All external HDs work with PS3, as long its a USB HD, which you will then need to format into fat32. On the internal, go with a 5400rpm 2.5 inch SATA HD for LAPTOPS. I bought a Seagate 500gb for $55 on amazon. The internal HD restriction is that you can't fit a 1TB, there a bit too thick.
When you start to the firmware update for your PS3, do not unplug the power, or thats the end for your PS3. Update to official 3.55 firmware first using system update, then choosing via storage media. After that finishes, enter recovery mode and install 3.55 Kmeaw via System Update. To enter Recovery Mode, make sure your ps3 is off, Hold the power button until it turns on and shuts off. Lift your finger off the power button and press it again, only this time release it after you hear two consecutive beebs.
