hey guys just curious should i get another ps3 to back up games? (since i have like 25+ games and would really suck if my ps3 lens dies.. its the old ps3 40 gb console.).. since i hear about laser dying... or should i just wait for 3.6 cfw which will play games without the need of a disc? and provided i wont get banned for using that firmware.

Are you on CFW now? If your laser does die, you can still use a PC BluRay drive to rip games and then put them onto the PS3 over the network...and a new PC BluRay drive will cost a whole lot less than a new PS3.

...And do you play online a lot? If you do, then the CFWs really are not ideal right now...we can get online, but there is still a lot of concern about sony logging you for account or console bans. Personally, I use a second system for online games (I play all offline games run from the Kmeaw 3.55 system)...but I didn't pay for the second system, and I wouldn't have either.

FTP is mainly for games on the internal; not the external ones. Of course, you won't fit many games on a 40GB; that is why so many people are going to 500GB, 750GB, and 1TB drives.

I have two PS3's running kmeaw 3.55 - one is an older 40gb unit with a dead laser (thanks to the Sony's botched 3.01 firmware update) and the other is a newer slim model I got as a replacement. I've experimented with discless mode on both units with several different versions of different backup managers and what I found was regardless of what combination I used, discless did NOT work on the one with the dead laser. It did work just fine with the other unit, so I've come to the conclusion that discless mode will only work if you have a functional bluray drive - essentially rendering it useless.

I finally gave in and bought a replacement laser off of eBay so I'm hoping I'll be able to use both units soon.

The process that guide is showing how to do does work at this moment. I didn't use that guide but it looks pretty much the same as others I have seen.
