Why is it that DVD Shrink will only burn at 2.4x no matter what speed of burner or speed of the blank discs?

DVD Shrink doesn't burn at all, it just rips/encodes. How long that takes seems to depend on a lot of things including the speed of your system as a whole. Can you give us more info so we know what you mean?

Karen H.--Dell Optiplex GX240, P4 1.50ghz, 256mb RAM (yeah, I need more), Windows XP Pro w/SP1, 80gb c: drive (replaced the 20gb c: that crashed), 126gb i: drive, 124gb j: drive, 500gb external hard drive partitioned into k: and l: drives, Sony DDU1621/C1 DVD-ROM to rip/encode, Sony DRX-530UL to burn, new Sony DRX-840U to burn DL discs ... need a new computer to go with it!!

I have a Dell with a celeron 2.4GHZ with 640MB ram with a 40GB 7200 RPM hard drive. I have used DVD Shrink on a pentium 4 system and both machines that when Shrink starts the burn it always says burning at 2.4x. I have a sony burner that is a 8x burner. I am using 4x discs, but every time it is 2.4x. Shrink is burning with Nero anything i can do to change this?

I checked Nero and I can not change the speed to more than 2.4x. It takes about 20 min to do just the burn process in shrink. It usually take approx 45-60 min total. I have the firmware update for the sony burner.

What is the manufacturer ID of the discs you're using? You can use this to find out:

http://www.dvdinfopro.com/

If Nero is telling you it can only burn at 2.4X that means your drive is telling Nero that's the maximum speed the disc should be written at. Oftentimes cheap media will be sold as as 4X but in practice it will only burn at slower speeds.

The brand of DVD media is memorex and the Manufacturer ID is CMC MAG F01. It says that it is 4x media also. I know that Nero has Drivespeed should I use that, because I have never used that before? Should I re-install Nero would that help?

1jigalo,

Mine is dictated by the media I use. When using Verbatim 2.4x it burns at 2.4. The TDK 4x I use actually burn somewhere between 6-8x.

Have you tried Nephilim's link for dvdinfopro? You can use the trial version. You can also try Nero's infotool.

2.4x sounds like a DVD-RW disc that you are using.

DVDinfopro will also tell you what speeds your burner can burn the media at if you click on "Media". You should be able to burn at any of the speeds listed. Of course, there is no guarantee that you will get a good burn at all of the speeds listed if you are using crappy media. Using Ritek G04, Verbatim (MCC) and Prodisc have always worked for me. This is with a Pioneer A07. The Prodisc may not work as well with other burners. I also have a Lite On LDW-411s modded to a LDW-811s and the Prodiscs don't work as well on it The Riteks don't either, actually. They are all playable, but I get better Kprobe scans with discs burned on the A07.

Hi 1jigalo

I too have used the same Memorex disks that you are using and they would not burn at 4x. I too thought that it was a problem with my burner until I found out that it was all down to the disk that is used. As soon as I switched to Ritek G04 or Verbatim with Advanced AZO my problem was solved. Try some different brands and I'm sure you will be OK.

CMC has a great reputation for making terrible DVD media. Switching to the above mentioned Ritek G04 or Verbatim Metal AZO media could be a very good thing :)
