NEC 1100A - can't erase/overwrite

I've got a NEC 1100A dvd+RW drive. It's the OEM version, inside a Fujitsu-Siemens Scaleo 600 machine. I don't burn many DVD's but I've never been able to get the drive to overwrite a disk thats already written to. I use TDK disks as recommended by NEC; I've tried erasing the disks using Nero and DVD InfoPro but whenever I try this the machine locks up and I have to power down/up to get started again. I called Fujitsu Siemens who suggested re-installing the software -that was no good. Then they blamed the media, so I got some HP disks - no difference either. I've gone through about £50 worth of disks trying to get it to work.

The thing just refuses to overwrite or re-format/erase. Has anyone else experienced this, or know the reason why this is happening?
