I have tried to back up this disk with DVD X Copy Platinum and with DVD Cloner. I thought my disk might be damaged so I rented one. Same problem. Borrowed a disk from a friend who also had the same problem, tried it on two different computers. The disk reads fine but it will not write under any circumstances. I have been at this for weeks. If anyone has any ideas, they would be really welcome. I have two HP computers, both P4's, one is 1.8Ghz and one is 3Ghz, both have 512 DDR, Windows XP Home edition. I own all four seasons box sets, this is the only disk that gives me the problem. Thanks!

Thanks, I assume that is another ripping program. I did manage to copy the file to my hard drive using DVD X Rescue but I am stuck as on how to burn it to a DVD, I have just over 7 gigs and the DVD only holds 4.7. Maybe DVD Shrink will do it.

Yes, now use DVD Shrink to "shrink" the 7gig file down to 4.4 or so for burning. Since the compression rate will be high, you should probably do a "deep analysis" in Shrink too -- it'll take longer but will be worth it in the end (normally Shrink's analysis takes only a couple of minutes -- adding the step of "deep analysis" will probably add 45-50 minutes to the process). Have you used Shrink before? I think there's a guide for it -- look up at the top of this page under "guides." Good luck! BTW I just got this Sopranos set and have only backed up disc 1 so far -- I wonder if I'll get the same problem with disc 2 ...

Yes Karen, you will. I DVD X Rescue reports the disk has soft errors. All three disks I tested have the same problem. Those are recoverable. I downloaded Shrink, a guide for it and I have burned the movie to my hard drive. Now I am downloading Nero so I can burn it. I will report the results.

Luckily I have DVD Rescue too so I will have it ready! :-) Won't have time to work on it 'til next weekend though. I'll report then.

BTW I've also had luck on some "problem" discs (e.g. West Wing season 2, forget which disc -- it's the "Ellie" episode) using Decrypter -- my original West Wing disc skipped and so I tried renting it twice and both rentals were also damaged in exactly the same place. But I told Decrypter to "ignore disc errors" after retrying them a few times (its default was to retry each error 20 times but that was taking forever so I re-did the setting) and it got through the problems. My back-up copy also has the little skip, but it's only a couple of seconds (just like the original) so I can live with it. Shrink couldn't get past the error at all, it just froze, and DVD Rescue was taking so long I thought it wasn't going to get through it and I gave up and tried Decrypter.

Anyway, since Decrypter is free it's a good option to have "just in case" for the future.

I appreciate that Karen. Nero is taking quite a while to further render this disk but it seems to be doing very well. I will let you know. Also, I will go and find Decrypter. Thanks for the tip

Thanks to kcc76 and to Karen 2003. Using DVD Shrink, which is free, fantastic and easy to use, I copied the file to my hard drive, edited it and shrunk it to fit. Using the latest version of Nero I used the burn DVD function and created a perfect copy of a disk I thought I would never be able to back up. Thanks guys, you were really helpful.

I had the same problem with "episode dvd's" so I used dekrypter first to download the whole movie to my HD. Even though, in some dvd's, dekrypt found errors I manage to write the entire dvd retrieving all errors. Then I used recode 2 with deep analisys and the outcome was fine. In one ocacion Decrypt foud more than 25 errors, but after burning with recode 2 the burnt DVD had only one skip (about 1 second) and no pixels. The picture quality was very good to.
