I purchased a Plextor PX-708A burner several months ago and have burned numerous (>50) DVD movies, as well as some data DVDs. I also have burned many Audio and some Data CDs.
But recently the DVD burn functions seem to be....well, not functioning. I read a thread that seems to resemble my problem, although with a different brand of burner. But just like the other user, I can still burn CDs just fine.
Does anyone have any more info regarding this problem?
Would the drive no longer be able to READ DVDs if it could no longer BURN them?
Thanks in advance,
D

Sounds to me like it may be a bum drive. Have you contacted Plextor about your problem?

I e-mailed them yesterday and await their reply. I think I will give them a call and force their hand a bit. If I do have a bad drive I would like to get it taken care of ASAP.
Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure why you couldn't just post the actual link instead of the annoying "click through" link, but at least you are trying to help.
I have done my best to sift through the Plextor site to get answers, and did consider the media as a potential problem. However, before having these problems, I did successfully burn DVDs on the media that will now NOT burn. Also, there have been firmware updates that may not be reflected in the compatibility charts.
Thanks for the input. Send me your home address, I'll mail you 2 pennies.

WTF ?!?!?!?!
I try to give you a hard time about the click through, and now it's gone.
I'm convinced.....everyone's against me......except the people in this forum of course.
Thanks,

What media have you been using? Here's a cool little app that will give you the manufacturer ID:
http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/
It may be worthwhile to try something like Verbatim Metal AZO or Maxell media to see what happens :)

I have used Philips and Imation DVD+Rs with great success, along with Memorex DVD+RWs. The problems began after I bought some TDK+Rs. I don't think the media is to blame, though, because I have had some success with the TDK, and now the Memorex blanks don't work either. I also tried to use the single Plextor DVD that came with my drive. That also failed.
BTW, thanks for the link to the DVD identifier.
Cheers.

Strange indeed. The media that came with my 708A was Taiyo Yuden which is among the best you can get and it burned wonderfully so if yours was TY as well the problem is something besides media.
It's possible your ASPI may have been corrupted and an update might help. Here's a good link:

Is DMA still enabled for the Plextor?

I will check the ASPI after I get home from work - I had considered that, but don't know much about it.
Yes, DMA is enabled for all IDE channels.
Thanks a ton for the support.

Nephilim,
I followed that link you posted regarding the ASPI layer and removed the 4.71 versions that were installed and reverted to the 4.6 versions. My first burn was successful and I am viewing the DVD to make sure it worked. I tried another burn and received a "calibration area full" error and the burn failed.
I guess 50% is better than 0%.
I'll keep trying

The saga continues!
Here's a link that explains "power calibration/calibration area full" errors (#14).
Can you post the manufacturer ID of the different media you've been using?
Has Plextor responded yet?

Not to distract but the problem with 4.71 aspi wasn't so much a problem with compatibility as it was an installation problem. force aspi resolved that and made 4.6 the most stable install version. Now there's force aspi 1.8 which uses the 4.71 versions which is good for Windows XP. Be sure to follow what are the simplest instructions I've ever seen
Get it here:
http://forceaspi18.w.interia.pl/
* Run dumpASPI to backup your current ASPI layer
* Run instASPI to install the new ASPI layer
* Reboot your PC
* Run aspichk to see if everything worked OK
That's it!

ForceASPI 1.8 installs 4.71.2 doesn't it?
Personally, I've had the best luck with Adaptec's 4.71.2 which installs 4.71.2 for ASPI32.SYS/WINASPI32.DLL and 4.60 for WOWPOST.EXE/WINASPI.DLL, but that's my machine and not everyone's :)

Hmm! Yes to the versions you mentioned,4.71.2. Mine worked just fine with force aspi 1.8, lazy mans solution, but effective. If it works then it works.
I'm not familiar with any problems with 1.8 but as you so clearly stated, that's my machine and not everyone's.

Am I missing the link?
NO, Plextor has not contacted me yet. Although I did call them and they told me how to perform the self-diagnostic, which the drive passed. When I e-mailed them to tell them that the drive passed, someone e-mailed me back and asked about the light sequence when the drive failed. Obviously if their technical aptitude is as sharp as their reading comprehension, they will be of little help in fixing this problem.
I did use ForceASPI to install the 4.60 version of the following:
ASPI Information
----------------
System ASPI
WNASPI32.DLL : 4.60 (1021) 45056 bytes September 10, 1999
ASPI32.SYS : 4.60 (1021) 25244 bytes September 10, 1999
WINASPI.DLL : 4.60 (1021) 5600 bytes September 10, 1999
WOWPOST.EXE : 4.60 (1021) 4672 bytes September 10, 1999
**** THIS ASPI FILE IS ALSO LOADED - ANY CHANCE THERE IS SOME KIND OF CONFLICT? ****
Nero ASPI
WNASPI32.DLL : 2.0.1.59 160016 bytes January 29, 2003
At this point, it's hard to believe that ASPI is to blame. I have now had two different versions installed and neither work. The DVD that I "successfully" burned, began to skip near the end of the movie and eventually crapped out altogether.
I do really appreciate all the input you folks have given me. At this point my faith in Plextor helping me out is fading.
As far as the manufacturers info goes:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:RICOHJPN-R01-002]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc Type : [DVD+R]
Manufacturer ID : [RICOHJPN]
Manufacturer Name : [Ricoh Company Ltd.]
Media Type ID : [R01]
Product Revision : [002]
Disc Application Code : [General Purpose]
Recording Speeds : [1x , 2.4x , 4x]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4,482.6MB = 4.38GB (4.70GB)]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com] --------------------------------------------------------------------------
I also checked the imation DVD+Rs that I used with great success and they do not appear on Plextor's media compatibility tables.

After speaking with Plextor, they gave me the option of just sending the drive in for replacement. Since installing the new drive, I have burned 4 DVDs successfully. I haven't viewed them yet, but all signs point to the drive being faulty.
Thanks for all of the help everyone. Hopefully my problem will help shed some light on drive failures.
