I've just installed my new optorite DD1203. I've tried to burn four discs all coasters. I kept my sony 500a installed and tried a burn with it, also a coaster. Nero 6 gave me a power callibration error on every burn. Below is a log of th proccess. Oh, It reads just fine, got up to 11x, just can't right.

Hiya,

I noticed that your version of Nero is the old buggy version and an update to 6.3.1.15 couldn't hurt.

It may also help to update your ASPI as well.

http://www.hazza.dsl.pipex.com/faq.htm#ASPI

Power calibration errors are usually caused by low quality media or a sub par drive. I noticed that you're using Ritek G05 so I doubt it's the media. On the other hand, Optorite's don't exactly have a stellar record for quality and performance. I've seen many people go through quite an ordeal to get the drive to burn properly. Here's a link to a Nero troubleshooting page that deals with power calibration errors:

http://www.nero.com/us/632181809668074.html

There'a also a newer firmware revision for your drive which may very well solve your problem. It can be found here:

I solved this problem; It was due to both the sony and the optorite on the same IDE channel. I disconnected the sony and now the optorite works superb. Its amazingly fast; I can't speak for others that have purchased an optorite, but I'm more than satisfied with mine. I've reached cosistant speeds of 12x using dvd+r (recommended brand names of course) and 8x using dvd-r. It also rights to low quality discs at a consistant 4x; sometimes it jumps to 5x using low quality media; not alot of drives can do that using low quality media.

Thanks. Hey, I see you have the 708. I was so close to getting the 712A, but the plextor won me over with its 88.00 price. I heard that plextor has a lot of neat tools. Can I use them with my optorite, or are they plextor tools only.

PlexTools only work with Plexor's, one of the extra perks of buying Plextor. I really like the 712 but I'm still holding out for a dual layer from Plextor.

See you around :)

Nephilim, it is more than likely not widely known, but from what I heard (from a reliable source), the 712 will have a firware update which will allow the 712 to burn dual layer disks. I will not get one until I find out for sure, but if it does happen, remember that you heard it here, first. hehehe

BTW, I did not see Plextools bundled with my retail 708A that I just got.(My 2nd one). I now have one in both of my computers. Does Plextools work with Windows XP?

DL for the 712 eh? I like the sound of that.

In all reality I probably won't upgrade to DL until the media is reasonable (I can't bear the thought of a $15 coaster) so who knows what will be availble by then.

PlexTools works great under XP so you should be fine there.

So I see Plextors are kinda like Pringles for you - can't have just one! :P

LOL Nephilim. For burners, all I have ever had were Plextors. First one was about 7 or 8 years ago.

I will look for the Plextools on the disc that came with the Plextor.

Well, damn. I just checked the disc that came with the Plextor. No Plextools. It must be a for sale, stand alone program now. :(

Come to think of it, my copy of PlexTools came with my Plextor Premium CD/RW. I don't think my 708A came with Plextools.

That's really odd. Have you contacted Plextor about it? Maybe they could explain why you didn't get PlexTools.

I haven't talked to them, but I will look in one of my CD/RW packages from a year ago, to see if it is on that disc.

Nephilim. More news on firmware update for the 712. It is doubtful that the firmware will be publicly available. However, the firmware will more than likely work with both the 708A and the 712.

I did not get this information from any firmware hack type site. The source is reliable. I would imagine that there will be a hack firmware out there in the near future, though.
