WTF is this?????? A quick and easy DMA/PIO check can help to elimiate the possibility of it being drive transfer limitations which cause choppy video -- please cease these inflammatory statements

I must also say that I disagree with some of the [mis]information Nephilim is handing out...believing that it could compound your problems.
I'm so happy you know everything.

If my advice could compound his problems maybe you could grace us all with your infinite wisdom and explain why. It would be perfectly relevant to the thread in case others happen to read it and fall into total despair from reading my horrid advice.

For what it is worth, your choppy video problem is not unique to large video files and the limitations of XP's Smartdrive...which is what orchestrates the whole cache/data transfer process.
smartdrv.exe isn't even a part of XP. It's a utility you load on a boot disk. You know what else orchestrates data transfer with drives? DMA/PIO and in case you didn't notice one of his drives is in PIO.

I've not used any of these, and so I can't offer a recommendation
That's reassuring.

So your answer to his problem is to tell him to get software to make up for a problem that he shouldn't have anyway with the correct hardware/system settings?

Nephilim...

I'm humbled. It's also reassuring to know that I can still make mistakes. My apologies if I offended thee. BTW, I edited out my comments.

And, I thought that geestar already did the PIO/DMA check after vurbal suggested it in the 4th post. It looked like things were going in circles...but you smoked that one out. Congrats.

I do have a question for you though. If geestar does like you suggest, and puts a DVD drive on each IDE channel, which drive would you suggest he pair his HDD with?

The ROM could be slave on either channel though I'd personally put it as slave to the burner since I don't partake in any "on the fly" silliness so there'd only be one drive using the channel at a time :)

I don't mean to cause any problem's between people, I just want to get this problem fixed. I feel this problem is not going in circles and everybody's help and information has helped me so much in understanding my computer alot more.

The only time I use "on the fly" is when I copy my ps2 games (which now is not an option)
I am going to leave my drives the way they are Liteon-master, Pioneer-slave
When I use shrink to analyse and encode, the frames per second slow down while in this process (causing choppy or frezzing-per frame)and taking longer to write this info to hard drive.

Right now I'm just spoiled and I love the speediness this drive used to have, for now the pioneer will have to pick up the slack.

-Doc409- to mee this was not a turd hunt and your info helped greatfully, I will continue to look forward for your info in the future

-Nephilim- I am going to ask ton's of questions from you in the future so get ready.

Hiya,

From your earlier post:

Which drive is this?

geestar...

Hey...I was out-of-line with my comment. It's that simple. You didn't cause problems, I did. I had invested some energy into helping you...and when it looked like nephilim was re-inventing the wheel with the already-tried DMA/PIO approach...I got a little impatient...and thus my comment. At this point I can appreciate his thoroughness...and wish I had waited to let the process play out. Live, learn, and move on.

I do have a couple of other theories that go beyond the system setting arena, though. If you'd still like for me to follow up on them, I'll need your CPU specs.

Hey -Nephilim-
Quote:
Secondary IDE Channel:

device 0
Device Type (grayed out)
Transfer Mode (DMA if available)
Current Transfer Mode (PIO Mode)

Which drive is this?
In the device manager, I click on the --IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers-- and this what I get,

NVIDIA NForce
Primary IDE channel
Secondary Ide channel

And in the -Secondary Ide channel- I click on the "Advanced Settings" tab and this is what I get.

Device 0
Device Type (grayed out)
Transfer Mode (DMA if available)
Current Transfer Mode (PIO Mode)

Device 1
Device Type (grayed out)
Transfer Mode (DMA if available)
Current Transfer Mode (Ultra DMA Mode 2)

The driver provider is MICROSOFT for both Primary and Secondary IDE channel

Am I making sence?

Well...you have a nice system, and it seems like it should support the Liteon. Also, it does look like it is in PIO mode if it is still cabled as the Master/Liteon & Slave/Pioneer. As Nephilim pointed out, this could be the source of the problem, and would make this drive run slower, etc.

I don't know if the PIO Liteon setting would affect the Pioneer that is set at DMA and Slave. I tend to think not, and so your slow burn problem could be related to something else.

First...I would consider overheating. Your generation processor slows down when it gets hot. Most heat sinks are designed to keep the CPU cool at 70 deg F ambient. If you are in a room where the temp is, say 85 degrees, this could be a problem. Also, it is advisable to have a case fan so that the CPU exhaust heat is removed.

I would also suggest you go into the BIOS/Setup utility and open "Advanced Settings." See if there are any "Cache" categories such as L2, and System BIOS, and whether or not they are "Enabled"?

Hi,

You can use Nero Info Tools to see what exactly is on what channel. Once you open Info Tools go to the Configuration tab and it should list what device is attatched to each channel :)

That's definitely a problem. Are the jumpers on the back of the drive set correctly?

What happens if you switch the drives on the chain (don't forget jumpers)? Does the Lite On still remain in PIO?

If you have a spare cable lying around you might try switching it out for the existing one to eliminate the possibility of a bad cable.

You never know, I'm just trying to cover even the little things since I know all too well from personal experience that sometimes the solution turns out to be some stupid little thing that I never would have considered trying but ended up trying out of desperation :)

Concerning the cable, sometimes there is a bad connector to start with, and it only needs a little bit of stress to lose partial or complete contact with one of the conductors. This is rare, but it does happen.

If you do have a spare cable, make sure it is 80 conductor...and not a 40. (You are using an 80 conductor, aren't you?)
