Which button on start up do I push.. I doesn't say on my start up, it just gives me a quick configuration of my graphics card an it say's I have 256 of ram

I believe most systems now use the DEL key. Press it as soon as the first screen comes up. (Some systems also use a "F" Function key, but try the DEL first.
Since you had to ask, it gives me the idea you haven't done this before. I am going to suggest you make notes of the cache settings. When you get ready to exit the BIOS, it will ask you if you want to save the changes...even though you didn't make any. I am going to suggest you say NO the first time in and out so you get comfortable with the process. Also, do you have a Motherboard manual that came with your system?
Also, did you make the DMA setting change...and did things get back to normal?

As an afterthought...if you have a NUM LOCK light that is on after every re-boot, and you find it annoying...you can "disable" it in the Advanced Settings area.

Sorry their guy, my Super Computer has no Bios/setup in th advanced tab and the "cpu cache" was grayed out and only said 512K
I guess I should read up on my mother board users guide, the dell at work gives me F2

You might have missed the "time envelope" when booting. DEL is the most common key...just keep it pressed. Here is a link with all the combinations: http://www.usbman.com/Guides/bios_update_sites.htm
What you want to see then is a 4-color screen with a menu that looks like you are in SAFE MODE. "Advanced Options" should be a category that you can arrow key to. Your MB manual can tell you the exact words, though. And it will give you the cache categories and the suggested settings.
Your AMD chip has 128KB of L1 cache and 512KB of L2. Sometimes the L2 cache is disabled in the default MB settings. Your system builder should have enabled it, if that was a BIOS option. This is no guarantee that they did. Also, I don't know the meaning of the grayed out 512K other than it is your CPU cache size.
I don't want to stray too far from your original problem, though. Were you able to make the DMA change...and then test the Liteon? Are you back to operating where you were?

well see, Im going to try it now. I also borrowed a friends dvd-rom thats sitting around (Pacific Digital) only a month old. Crossing fingers

well...That pacific digital worked flawless, no skipping feezzing, choppiness or anything while decrypting, shrinking and encoding, It was actually faster than my Liteon (in my opinion) Or mybe it's that 100xCD program.
Anyway's It seem's it was my Liton that was glitchy and was ready to retire.

every thing is all gravy now, no issues what's so every. Like I said, It was probably retire time for the ol'Liteon, that sucker has been through hell and back.
Also with all the configurations I made (with your guys help) the whole damn computer runs smoother (maybe placibo effect, HA!) =P

geestar...thanks for the praise...but really I think if nephilim hadn't jumped in the problem wouldn't have been "properly" resolved.
nephilim...if your're still on this thread. When a drive starts to go bad, will the system go to default settings (DMA to PIO) on its own? I can't find anything on that. And...do you think the failing Liteon would drag the rest of the system down...even if it wasn't in use? This would be good info to know for the future.

That's definitely a possible symptom of a bad drive. If Windows experiences enough read errors it will automatically set the drive to PIO mode. It doesn't always mean the drive is bad, as there are obviously lots of things that can cause read errors, but if the drive is going bad you could certainly expect it to happen.

The whole system wasnt' slow, just the dvd-rom making the programs slow. I went into Nero inf tools and the DMA was on, on the Pacific, the Liteon was not.
So that is a good question-

Hi,
Like vurbal said, when Windows runs into transfer errors it'll kick the device down to PIO.
I imagine in geestar20's case his drive was in the process of dying and that was causing enough problems for Windows to kick the transfer rate down.
Glad things worked for all of us and especially you, geestar20 :)
