Hello, i could really use some help here. I've been doing this for several months now and this site has been extremely helpful...

I'm using a Sony DRU-530 internal burner with the latest firmware update. I'm using the Ritek G05 8X DVD-R media that i bought a 50pk from Meritline. I've used DVD-Identifier and they are genuine disks. My problem is that i'm still not having much luck even with these higher quality disks. I've just tried to backup the movie, Paycheck, twice now.

I'm using the latest version of DVD-Shrink 3.71 and doing a deep analysis in the re-author mode. I'm only burning the movie it's self and the English 5.1 audio. The compression usually no compression on the movies and if there is compression it's only shown at 90% or more which is good. I'm backing up the movie to my hard drive and then using the latest version of Nero 6 Ultra Edition to burn the Video_TS and Audio_TS files.

I can use Nero Showtime to play back the video files from my hard drive and everything runs perfectly smooth no problems at all. However, when I put the actual backed up DVD into my home player the movies will start to stutter very bad even causing the player to not read the disk anymore. Any suggestions on what i could be doing wrong or am i just having bad luck?

Does your player do this with all burned discs or just the 8X burns? I actually ran into a case where a certain player would play 4X burned discs flawlessly but it would skip all over creation with a disc burned at 8X. All discs were Riteks.

I'm a very firm believer in "faster isn't always better".

I have tried 4x burns on my player and have experianced same problems. However the only 4X disks i've used weren't very good quality they were 2x Fujifilm and 4x Memorex bought from Fry's. I only had about a 50% success rate on getting a good burn with those disks :/

These Ritek are the first 8X i've tried. I have not tried the backed up DVD in my computer yet, only the video files from the HD. I'm at work right now so i'll have to try and see if they play ok in computer. Last night i tried to backup Monty Python: Holy Grail. The movie was under 4GB but had exact same problem as the movie, Paycheck. It would play perfectly for about 30 min or so then from there on all the rest of the chapters were un-playable.

If it is a case where my home player just dosen't like 8X dvd's. Would it make a difference if i tried using the same 8X DVD's but burned them at 4X?

I love that movie!!!!!!!!

You may want to check your player's compatibility since some players don't do too well with burned media. Here's a good link:

Just for kicks you may try burning your G05's slower just to see what happens since that can sometimes help compatibility :)

Well I got home and tried out the backed up DVD in my computer and it ran perfectly. Then tried it in another home Sony DVD player and it worked perfectly.

So it was my Panasonic DVD-CV52 that is not fully compatible with 8X media.

On the lighter side I then took the same Ritek 8X DVD and burned it at 4X and it plays perfectly on my Panasonic home player.

I have a Panasonic DVD CP67 DVD player and I was wondering, even though I can burn at 8X should I? I haven't tried 4X or 8X on it, but since you guys are reporting problems with 8X should I just burn at 4X? What if I just buy 4X Ritek's instead of 8X, will that do the same thing?

Hi kinza,

Here's a link to a site where you can look up your particular model player and see what it likes or dislikes:

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers

I don't mean to come off as a naysayer when it comes to burning at high speeds, some folks do it with acceptable results. I'm just "old school" in my tastes for burn speeds. I like to know I'll have the best compatibiblity possible. The 7 minutes I save at 8X doesn't mean much to me.

There's no reason why you couldn't try a few burns at 8X and make your own decision based on the results :)

this is a great info tool, and you only save 6 min when you go from 4x to 8x which again is not that signifacant... when i bought my first cd burner it was only a 4x and i usually had to wait 20 min or a little longer each burn, but it didnt kill me... i did however get a 52x32x52 cd burner but even still i never went above 24x with it... guess im with some of the others that like to wait the extra few mins to ensure good quality/compatability.
